I have been considering both cars and know they are different animals. I would like to own one in the near future and have one of each in mind right now and may pull the trigger soon. I have owned a 90 tr and a 98 355 and curently have a 2003 360 which I will keep. I also want to be talked out of buying a Lambo roadster that is a 97 to 99 model. I like the looks a lot but am fearful of the mechanics.

a Ferrari shopuld be MUCH more reliable than a Lambo so theres a start

Personally I would Always take a 512TR over a 550. The 550 is nice but it looks way too conservative for me & the 512TR is just such a wild sex machine :)

Of course I'm biased but I'd buy the 512tr. A big perfomance gain compared to your 90tr. From a pure investment standpoint (if that matters) you will probably take a bigger hit with the 550. Does the 512tr you want have a Tubi exhaust and have you driven/heard it. the 550 is probably cushier for longer trips if thats on your agenda of things to do. imo both are awesome cars.
But a flat 12 will always be my choice between the two. ; )
If you have any further questions regarding 512 ownership feel free to pm me.
Good luck and let us know which one you bring home.

Very, very, different cars. I know that it is hard to get test drives, but you really need to drive one of each to be able to answer this question.

saying it has a tubi...is that like saying it has a chubby?

sounds kinda light in the loafers!

...not that there is anything wrong w/ that.

Gotta have Tubis on a flat 12, otherwise it's an injustice.
I,m confident if you heard one with them (you probably already have) your decision would be made ; )
    Best 2500 to 3000 you'll ever spend!

My 90 was black / black too and it was pretty. Black is a great color for that car.

they built many more 550/575's than 512tr/m's. so right off the numbers are in your favor. in other words, if you tire of the 512tr in a year, you will b able to sell it and get in a 550 for no loss, whereas a 550 today still has downside.

regarding the desireability of one over the other, that is far more difficult to quantify depending on your requirements.

i vote for the 512, but i am biased. :)

    550.

If you want to do some distance, the sheer effortless power of a 550, with power steering and traction control to suit your mood.

TR's are great though. Tough choice.

550 much cheaper to maintain. Newer, more reliable, 6 hour cambelt change,

Not a red 550 though. Just need a ladder on the roof to look like a fire truck. Go for silver/blue/black

Now, if you can run to a 512M, then the choice gets harder again........

I am totally unbiased! I don´t even own a Ferrari. I only love them, that´s all. Anyway, go with a black 512 TR. That car is such an awesome icon, and seems to be last (not counting the F512M) of the mid-engined 12 cylinders. Not that the mid-engined 12 is such a big factor in Ferrari heritage (I believe the 365 GT was the first), but still...

Ross, good point and I wasn't thinking about that. I figure the 550's are undervalued but maybe there's more downside.

Personally, I like the raw looks of the TR better. Never cared for the plain looks of the 550, although they do have a lot of power!

I put a tubi on my tr a few month's ago. I cannot compare it to other brands, only to what the stock sounded like.

The Tubi souds much better & definitely makes the car more fun to drive.

    512TR.

    No contest.

It's the last of the mid-engine 12-cylinder Ferraris; and so as far as I'm concerned, it is still king. It is a car that has had no replacement!

(I know, I'm repeating myself from other threads :) )

Do yourself a favor. At least drive a Maranello before you pull the trigger. It is hard to beat a shark.
