I'm going to switch cars sometime in the next year or so and the HSE really caught my eye. If I avoid the high milage and check it out with a 3rd party mechanic, is there any other reason you guys might know to be weary?

I loved mine (98). Mind you they are not the best handling or the best braking.

Are they that much cheaper then the 03's now? If you could I would go with the 03, they fixed all the quibbles of the MKII.

We have a '99 and an '04. If could could possibly swing a new model, you won't regret it. The '99 has had it's share of problems (a true brit), whereas the new one has been almost perfect (german engineering + british styling) save the navigation that broke... but it was replaced under WARRANTY. You'll probably want one with a Range :).

They are cool cars, even when they don't work. Which is rare. most of the time its rare. um, for the new one....

    haha.

Seriously, if you find a good one, go for it. They are pretty cheap now, around 20K? I'd suggest getting a reg. 4.6, no special editions like the Callaway or Rhino, those tend to have more problems. Good luck!

If you want a 4.6, go for the Vogue or the Annivessary if you can. A little bit more luxury. Most of the problems with the P38 Range Rover were electrical. After '96 the ECU was improved, but small things like door locks caused problems every now and again. These aren't crazy prices to replace, but they're not the cheapest either. Great cars. But like the others said, the 4.4 is even better.
    Cheers
