has started sagging on driver side. Leather is in excellent condition. Looking for some local help. can I just open it up from one side and glue it back? how do I open it?. I see I gotta take down atleast window molding that is overlapping the learner and top molding (with clips tucked inside the door gasket). please help. Local shops want to do whole thing and asking to much coz they will be fixing a Ferrari. $5000
Tried to see if there was any similarity on the 575M and it says to remove the molding panels, but never says how to get the headliner down once it is removed. Looks like the two models are substantially different. Most of the moldings on the 575M use push in clips, while the 456/456M uses screws. Somebody must have asked this question before because I already had the parts catalog page for 456M roof upholstery saved. It looks like the headliner is in at least three pieces. No section M (bodywork) in the 456M workshop manual I have, so not much help for this. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I have the identical situation. There is a shop with an outstanding reputation here in Portland and I'm planning on taking my car over there soon to get an estimate. I'll let you know what the guru has to say.
@Taz- I do see some push in clips, holding the molding above piece 5 (hidden under rubber door gaskit). I saw another picture somewhere that shows this and that molding had an clip in the middle also that needed to be pushed in to release. Do I just push the Clips to release? For piece 5, where is the screw at. I don't see it outside
I even though even cutting the leather (3-4 mm) on a side not so visible and using the 3M headliner spray. Spray can has a head with 3 setting (low spread to high spread) and will go into a 2-3mm space. I could just spray that in there all around (needs to be done twice with 10min wait) and reattach the leather. then fix that small 3-4mm cut. But the last thing i want to have is a cut in the leather that is still sagging... If the leather is glued and attaches to the board then fixing the small cut is not a problem. Any thoughts???
The leather sags, I believe, because it shrinks and pulls free of the roof. I'll talk to the interior restoration shop and get their bounce. My fantasy is that they can take the original leather, stretch it and reattach it, but I'll find out.
Paul- On the pieces with clips, the 575M WSM says to pry them loose and then they just pop in when replaced. I am wondering if, like Allan said, the headliner is held in by clips and the shrinking leather has pulled them loose. Also possible the headliner pieces are just captured by the moldings and the center roof piece.
I just went down the same road. I bought a 456 that needed new leather on the dash and rear shelf. The headliner and door panels looked like they had just pulled away and could be reglued. I pulled all the panels myself and brought them to my indy mechanic whom had an upholsterer connection. He looked at them and said they shrunk which made them pull away. Regluing was not an option. Total cost to reupholster everything was $3800. Colby
Well, now we'll be able to compare upholsterers' views. (After all the engine work this past summer, I'm not looking forward to the possibility of a big interior job).
Just got back from taking my car in. Guy said that the headliner could be reglued but the rear parcel shelf leather would have to be replaced. He said he needed to do some research and I offered to send him some info (I'll copy and paste the schematic Terry posted into an email to him). He guessed that, if the windshield didn't have to come out (and I gather from your post that it didn't), he thought he could do it all for around a grand, including a "perfect match" on the rear parcel shelf leather. I said, obviously, "sounds okay to me." I'll see if the price holds after he's done his own legwork.
Allan- Great deal. Would have jumped on that myself. You are correct. Nothing in the interior of the car requires fiddling with the windshield or any fixed glass.

Dean's car was a 1995 456; are there any major differences in the headliner removal processes between the 456 and the 456M? (other than clips vs. screws)?
I forwarded the contents of Dean Halter's thread to my upholstery guy (his name actually is "Guy"), so when the job's done, I should be able to give a pretty good report on the process (I haven't asked him yet about whether he could take pictures as he worked and send them to me).
Thanks. Still waiting to hear back before he gets started (he's got about 2 weeks worth of interior work ahead of me in his shop already; mostly car show candidates).
Just got word I can bring in the car next Wednesday. I'll try to take some before and after photos (don't know if I can get to take them during the process).
Hi, I re-glued the leather on the roof of my 1999 456M, was quite straigth forward. The only thing that took excessive time was to remove the leather that had not loosened yet. Had to do that to get to the location where it had loosened. Regards. Ole Andreas
The shop owner called a while back to say he still didn't have space to get my car in and would call me. Since I don't want to be without my car during the few months of nice weather, I decided to allocate my summer budget to getting new drilled and slotted rotors and will do the headliner and parcel shelf when the rains return.
My glue (Contact glue from Würth) lastet about three months before it began to sag again. I will re-do this job again this winter and find a more suitable glue. Also considering to drill some holes in the fiberglass to out air between the leather and the fiberglass if the air expands on hot days. Not to happy to re-do this job, but at least I have tested one glue that did not work. Does anyone know which glue that was used originally? Regards. Ole Andreas
I'll be tackling this also. Played golf with a friend in Sacramento and the car sat in the sun for a few hours. Even with windows cracked and a screen on the dash/windshield both sides of the headliner are drooping now... Oh we'll. Any guidance on contact cement to use?
