I am selling my 2001 550 Maranello (USA car) Basic details: Grigio Titanio over gray with the rare factory carbon fiber interior package 49,150 miles Clean Carfax Fabio 6-1 headers (Ceramic coated), cats, H-pipe, and Tubi mufflers (Complete OEM exhaust included - headers, cats, midpipe, and valved mufflers) Very well maintained with all of the typical 550 well-known issues addressed. Recent maintenance highlights (this is all in addition to the standard annual fluids): 2019: Standard “Major” belt service, including Hill Engineering tensioner bearings, valve cover gaskets, etc. Additionally, the front lower timing cover was found to be leaking, so front main seal, Hill Engineering bearings, and associated O-rings and gaskets were all replaced. 2020: Fuel pump holders replaced, fuel tanks removed and cleaned, injectors rebuilt. 2021: Alternator replaced, Upgraded fuse board installed, ALL coolant hoses replaced with the upgraded factory silicone versions. Water pump rebuilt, thermostat replaced, radiator flushed. 2022: New SPAL radiator fans and stand-alone wiring harness installed. Motor mounts replaced (575 version). New cam position sensor, crank position sensors, and all 4 O2 sensors. Spark plugs replaced. New oil pressure sending unit. I absolutely love this car but a growing family and some shifting priorities dictate that it’s time to move on. This is a well-known and documented car here on Fchat, belonging to niftyfivefifty before myself. I purchased the car on BAT last year and have put under 1,000 miles on it in almost a year and a half. The high-pitched sound with Fabio’s 6-1 headers is incredible and very distinct from a 550/575 with ANY other exhaust setup. It is a very well-sorted example which I would put in the “nice driver” category. It is not in concourse condition, and does exhibit normal wear associated with age and mileage (rock chips on the front bumper, etc.) Overall, the paint is in very good condition (aside from the rock chips on the front bumper), and is believed to be original. Interior is likewise in good shape, with no major blemishes. It runs strong, has no codes, CELs, or any other issues. Passes GA emissions with no problems and all systems functional. When I purchased the car on BAT, it did have a number of needs. I documented my journey addressing these needs in this thread, but will also provide a brief summary below. https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/some-minor-sorting-on-my-550.667829/ Issue: Codes/CEL for catless headers and secondary air delete. (would not pass emissions as a result) Resolution: I removed the headers, sent them back to Fabio in Italy to have re-worked to incorporate the secondary air pipes, and purchased his cats along with his center H-pipe. The result is a distinctly different sound from before and no CELs. I passed emissions in GA with no issues after this. Issue: Oil pressure light flickering at hot idle. Resolution: replaced oil pressure sending unit. Issue: Missing interior and trunk panels/carpeting from previous stereo equipment install. Resolution: I sourced all of the necessary components either used or new from Ferrari to complete the trunk and interior, so nothing is missing and everything is in order. Issue: No radio or speakers. (aftermarket stereo equipment had been removed). Resolution: I sourced a period-correct radio which looks “right” but also has Bluetooth capability. Likewise aftermarket speakers of the correct size to put in the factory locations. The radio/audio system now operates as it should (all factory wiring retained, etc.) Apologies for the novel, but I wanted to address everything up front for the benefit of those who will go back to the BAT listing and be curious about the issues revealed there. **videos of the sound with the Fabio headers coming soon** Please let me know if interested. Happy to provide additional info or pictures of specific areas. PPI welcome. In my opinion the 550 and 575 are the best looking of all modern Ferraris. Gorgeous car. Gated. GLWS.
I’ve said it before….in my opinion this is one of the most desirable 550’s in North America because for me personally the Fabio set up and carbon interior alone are so rare and expensive then add the Daytonas and an interior color I like and it’s a winner. Before I bought my 550 I tried to buy this one! Hope whoever ends up with it continues to share the stories along the way, I’ve really enjoyed following this car on our sub forum. GLWTS — Eric
I agree that this would be the one to buy! Great spec and upgrades and all maintenance done. Patina and mileage take away stresses of ownership and allow enjoyment of the car to the fullest!
Not living in CA, I am not sure what all is involved with passing smog. The car does have Fabio's cats, and it passes GA emissions, which means the car's computers are happy "o2 sensors, thermocouples, etc." are all satisfied with the readings they are getting, hence no codes or Check Engine Light. I am almost certain that there are cars (550/575/599) running Fabio's setup in CA. Whether those cars are registered in other states and simply driven in CA I am not sure... @Ferrari55whoa any insight here? Also, the car does come with the complete stock exhaust included in the sale (headers, cats, midpipe, and mufflers). So, should you wish to put it back to 100% stock, that is an option. I am positive that you would have no issue finding a buyer for the Fabio exhaust components if you were to go that direction. In fact I can put you in touch with at least 2 if it comes to it.
Anything passing smog in CA is a complete PITA. There is a private discussion about this topic on the Rosso section. My 550 passed smog when I bought it but getting it to pass by the prior owner was not easy. I just did the smog again in January….no CEL’s….but I was still nervous because I don’t want the hassle of not passing and then deciding if I have to do what a lot of guys eventually do. I love California and moved here in 2001 but the state has a way to take the fun out of everything. Even if it had low enough emissions with the cats, if the smog ref sees the headers then they could fail based on a “visual mod”. When I approached Nifty interested in buying this and it was without cats, I was at that time prepared to do what many other guys do. If anyone has more detailed questions send me a DM. I do want Fabios headers and assume that will be once my car leaves the state. 8-(
Thank you both for chiming in and yes, all too familiar with CA's smog regulations, including those having to do with aftermarket parts and/or mods. I'll consider further and keep an eye on this post.
Thanks to everyone for the kind words! As promised, here are a few short video clips to demonstrate the exhaust sound: Ferrari 550 Fiammenghi headers acceleration - YouTube Ferrari 550 Fiammenghi headers WOT flyby - YouTube Ferrari 550 Fiammenghi headers in-car acceleration - YouTube
Wow very impressive work on the 550, with good pics and explanations. I'm lucky enough to have the radiator fix on my 456; although it's a bit loud when it's on it is definitely effective. You've inspired me to go through all my connections; as you and others have mentioned they're very susceptible to the heat and fail. I'm sure I have some on the way out. Anyway kudos to your work and GLWS. If a few scenarios play out for me in the next month or so I may be a buyer. But this is a great car and i'm sure it will be long gone.... Keeping my eye on it!!
I have received several messages from folks asking some variation of "what does it need" or "what will it need" so I thought it prudent to address here. The belts should probably be done sometime next year. Given the extent of the servicing during and since the last belt change, this one should be very basic - belts and tensioners. Otherwise, there are no immediate needs. No leaks, no sticky buttons (forgot to mention that in the original post), everything works as it should. I've had a decent amount of interest, but the car remains available. I have some flexibility in the price, so feel free to reach out. I'd really like for this car to stay in the fchat family.
I had a dream about this car again last night….I was on a test drive with my wife and she was talking something about…having two 550’s is silly and as her tone got aggressive I laid into the throttle and couldn’t hear her over Fabio singing Maranello’s finest Aria!
haha let's make that dream a reality! Nothing wrong with more than one 550....just ask @Hawkeye I am preparing the car to submit to BaT in the near future.
I have some business deals and I’m waiting for them to come through. If it lands the way I would like in the land then I’m definitely a buyer! I just need another 30 to 60 days…..
So beautiful in the colors, and as soon as I saw the dash.....what? Carbon??? I have also heard that 6 into one is the business. That's perfection, to me.. GLWS!
I would have to add the Logo Lights in the door bottoms to highlight the ground at night.....you know......for effect!!!!
