For a first airplane, what do you think of the DA40? I found a 2001, one owner always hangered with 660 hours, no auto Pilot, 530/430 stack. Does this seem like a fair price? Anyone in the Chicago area? Feedback on the Diamond please vs Archer III and fairness of price.

The DA40 is a great airplane, especially as a trainer. I would keep watching the prices, you might even be able to get a DA40XL for a really good price.

Very safe airplane and well built, as said before a good trainer...I'm 6'3" and it would not be comfortable for cross country for me.

Without A/C this will be a hot box quickly in the summer months.

What are you looking to do with it? Archer III's come with Garmin 530/ 430 stacks, along with the S-tec 55 A/P. Archer does 120 KTAS with 4 pax where the Katana is an honest 2 pax plane and cruises around 100 KTAS. Granted, I haven't touched a Katana in 15 years now, and I know they have improved immensly. Piper products of late have great A/C systems as well, something to consider during the summer months. I used to work for a Piper distributor back in the day, and flew Archer's to the Malibu Mirage, so I'm kind of biased to the line.
