Stumbled across this, no affiliation: http://auctionsamerica.com/events/feature-lots.cfm?SaleCode=FL12&ID=r428&Order=alphabetical&feature=

What a great car to separate yourself from the Bimmers et al.

Anyone know (or care to speculate) how it ended up in the US?

    Road legal in the US?

I'm not a potential bidder (but wish I was), just curious.

Florida is one of the easiest, if not THE easiest state in the US to title and register non-USDM cars. I am sure you could title a Matchbox car in that state.

I don't know how it would be titled any other way other than with a Florida assigned VIN and technically it would be state legal, not federal.

I wouldn't own the car in California with that status, but wouldn't live in too much fear in many other states.

How it arrived? Could be like how some of the JDM cars arrive: in pieces (declared as parts), then reassembled. Shoot, a guy here in Idaho simply had two cars shipped from Japan and rolled the dice on whether customs would find them in the container. They didn't.

Autodelta was importing them for a while and they were even removing the Alfa badges and replacing them with Autodelta badges. Feds decided one day to crack down on them and that was it for the 166 in the states.

That sounds somewhat similar to what Kaizo was trying to do with the Nissan Skyline GT-Rs a few years back.

I did a quick Google search and it seems this car has been for sale quite awhile.

Here's an Alfa board thread dating to June '10: http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/alfa-romeo-cars-sale-wanted/166647-2002-alfa-romeo-166-a.html

And still listed with same dealer today: http://www.ochsnerautos.com/detail-2002-alfa_romeo-166-autodelta-used-4809323.html

    It's a USA certified car?

Do European cars of that era have OBD-II?

The Alfa 166 built 2000 and later had OBD-2.

We had several in Illinois from Autodelta. I also know of several up in Wisconsin. They were US street legal. It was FIAT that stopped Autodelta from importing them.

Here is a 156 from this area that was US legal.

Might not take too many pennies if no reserve or it's realistic...my skim of the Alfa board posts make me think that $20K is way too much.

    Cool!

I'd love to have something like that but my pennies are earmarked for other things at the moment.
