    History
Just before the new millennium, Honda brought their 1960s era of S roadsters back to life as the S2000. Continuing with the S500, S600 and S800 naming tradition, the S2000 was named for its 2.0 liters of engine displacement. This 240-horsepower inline-4 was a technological marvel with a specific power output of 120 hp/liter. At the time, Honda noted this was the highest output of any naturally aspirated engine. Then there was that screaming redline, besting the likes of Ferrari’s 360 Modena that wound up to 8,500 rpms.

AP1, the first generation, S2000s were a critical hit during their five-year production run. Car and Driver named it to their 10 Best List in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2004, while Top Gear ranked it #1 in their annual survey three times between 2003 and 2006. In 2002, a refresh of the AP1 generation brought a rear glass window with defrost, revised suspension settings and an upgraded stereo. The example on sale here includes all those improvements along with the Suzuka Blue Metallic paint job, new that year.

    Exterior
The exterior of this 2002 S2000 looks to be in excellent condition with its Suzuka Blue Metallic paint and power-operated black soft-top with glass rear window. Head and tail lamp lenses all look clear, body panels are straight and the original, 16” 5-spoke alloys look to be in very good condition. Wrapped in Firestone Firehawk tires sized 205/55 in the front and 225/50R in the rear, they frame disc brakes all around. There is no rust present and no history of paintwork or bodywork on the car. Blemishes on the left rear bumper, front lower fascia and driver’s door edge are detailed in the gallery

    Interior
The blue cabin features leather seat upholstery with color-keyed door panels, dashboard and carpeting. Aside from minor wear on the driver’s side, both seats show well. Wrapped in black leather, the three-spoke steering wheel frames an instrument panel dominated by the 9,000-rpm tachometer that sits above a digital readout of the speedometer and odometer. It is flanked by gauges for coolant temperature and fuel level.

Features include power windows, push-button ignition, cruise control and air conditioning. S2000-branded door sill covers are fitted and an integrated wind deflector is mounted between the twin roll hoops. Discoloration on the driver’s side door panel is documented in the gallery and per the owner, the original AM/FM/CD stereo, which is concealed in front of the aluminum shift knob, no longer works.

    Mechanical
Sitting in the well-maintained engine bay is the original 2.0L inline-4 that made 240 hp and 153 lb-ft of torque when new. This DOHC mill with VTEC variable valve timing powers the rear wheels via 6-speed manual and Torsen limited slip differential all the up to an 8,900-rpm redline.

With the engine mounted aft of the front axle, the S200 sports a 50/50 front/rear weight distribution. Combined with a curb weight under 2,800 pounds and double wishbones all around, the S2000 was made to carve canyons. Per the seller, all service records are believed to be included. The most recent was maintenance performed in June 2021, it consisted of an oil change with new oil and air filters.

    Details
Located in Daleville, Virginia, this 2002 Honda S200 shows just 33,000 original miles. Sold new in April 2002 at Della Honda of Plattsburgh, New York, the seller purchased it from the original owner in May 2003 with 3,610 miles on the odometer. Over the last 19 years, the car has been kept entirely original, and based on the extensive gallery and walk around videos, meticulously maintained. Back in 1999, Car and Driver suggested the S2000 was the stuff of sports car fantasies and with specs like this, its easy to see why.
