Thought I would share an experience I had while removing the remnants of a Virginia registration sticker on the left center bottom of my windshield. While scraping off, I was bumping the Left Hand Air Outlet Plate - not a good idea as it was very sticky and when I tried to get it to look back to normal, I was making it worse by loosening the goo that was covering it (similar to the way the buttons require Sticky No More I guess). I tried everything to no avail, then finally tried Goo Gone, with a lot of elbow grease to remove the gooey covering, it came back to life so it matched the right side vent. I saved myself $135 for the part and probably 8 hrs of labor to remove the upper dash, as I understand this is the only way to replace them!

So, first off those vent plates normally have broken posts. Second, we no longer refinish them as new OEM parts come with a hard touch coating so it's more economical to provide new parts to the client instead of refinishing.

Also @rizzo308 offers metal replacements, probably the only real permanent fix out there.
