a friend of mine in LA has a 2003 range rover with 11k miles on it...she doesnt drive it very aggressively and hasnt take the car off road....the front brakes started squeeking after a recent dealer visit for an oil change...she took the car back and was told she needs new front rotators and break pads at the cost of 750$$$....does this sound right?? will the break pads and rotators of a range rover wear out in less than 11k miles??? she was told this is normal for the car and because its normal wear it is not covered under warranty..any thoughts on what she should do??? i recommended, from long distance, to take the car to another dealership and an independant mechanic for a second opinion....

Well, the parts alone retail for around $380.00. I'm sure her dealer is close to if not at $100.00 per hour for labor. The L322 also has a GVWR of 6724lbs., and is known to eat front brakes pretty quick. For such a heavy rig, I think the brakes work amazingly well. The trade-off? sure, they wear out quick. For a $75k+ rig, $750.00 brake job sure doesn't seem outrageous.

Would you rather have good or cheap brakes?

My service rep lied to me and told me the pads were down to the metal and I needed new pads and rotors right away. I didn't bite on the $900 brake job and took the truck to a trusted shop that does all of my independent work. The pads still had at least 25% of their service life left and the rotors were within spec. Put some new pads on from British Atlantic and hit the road. That was the rears after about 16K of sports car like driving and occasional towing.

My 03' brakes have lasted up to 40,000 miles. Mostly highway driving though. Was told my tech that its probably due for pads in another 5k miles.
