I have done a search and have not gotten the answers I have wanted. I am doing some research for my dad's next car. It will be a 06 bmw 330i. i love the car, and he really likes it too. I have looked at multiple dealers in my area and cars on ebay, but they have more options then we want. Now my dad (and whole family) is technologically retarded. My dad blew his laptop up because he put the wrong plug in it. It was to something else. Whenever we try to fix something that has to do with electricity it catches on fire. so now you have some of the background, here is the question.

How much will a bare minimum accessorized (spelled soo wrong) 2006 bmw 330i cost? basically all we want is A/c, cd player, and radio.

I think 37k, or there abouts. Do they not have the 330i on the BMW site yet? you should be able to build your own.

I would look at the new Lexus IS350 as well. No harm in kicking the tires.

yea i went on the bmw usa site too. And this is what the specs we wanted, alpine white, beige leatherette, walnut trim, automatic (does this come stardard and the option i click on was another step up on it?), and 6 cd (does it come standard with just one cd. i dont think my dad even owns 6 cds). it came to 38,570. but without the 6 cd and the automatic option is was around 37. pretty good deal i think.

wow! alpine white, black leatherette interior with walnut is amazing!

no none at all. yea i know it isn't what i usually am, but im being serious. I would have never found or thought of going to the bmw usa site, and even more so i wouldn't have thought of looking at that list of the standard features

If you were my kid I'd tell you that as soon as you have your own money, you get to decide what car to buy. Until then, you can provide input, but that's about it.

my dad likes my idea. he came to me because I'm obsessed with cars. and he told me exactly what he wanted and the range of price. all I did was fill in the important stuff.

    Okay, little story here.

Earlier this year I was working as a contractor for Cymer Inc. They manufacture Excimer lasers. These are used in lithography for IC chip making.

The CEO called an all hands meeting to roll out a new quality program.

Evidently Cymer was making product with high performance and great specs but the uptime in the factory was way below some competitors. This problem was starting to eat their lunch, hence the new initiative.
To bring home the importance of making customers happy, he went on a rant about all the electrical problems his 7 series BMW has experienced over the year and a half he owned it. He was unhappy with the problems AND with the way BMW was responding. He ended with saying that he would NOT be buying BMW again.

    Erich
You might want to rethink the Asian bias thing.

I've heard very very good things about the 330i. And from the people I have spoken to (one on this website, and other people I have met in parking lots) they seem to love it and highly recommend it.

This is why you HATE japanese cars? have you driven a japanese car other than the cheapest possible ones? Go look at the IS350. I guarantee the interior will be on par in both materials and feel with the BMW. There is nothing tacky about them.

ok lemme get a pic of one and i'll show my dad it. And he'll decide because after all it is his car and his money. But before I do that, his range is between $30-$40K, but he said he is willing to pay 41 or 42 if he really likes it.

ok, I'm back. He said that it is nice, but it looks like a new 3 series to him. And he (and I), just noticed that the 330i is rear wheel drive, and that is not a good thing for the snow we can get up here. So now he is looking at the 325xi which is all wheel drive. He said he will look into the is350 in person to see if it looks less like a 3 series and if he really likes it.

They make an Is250 in AWD. Not the 350 though, it's also RWD.

I don't expect BMW's to be as reliable as a Japanese marque, but the 7-series is the worst BMW to buy for reliability. The 3-series and 5-series are BMW's bread'n'butter so I would expect them to be more reliable.

I can only compare against my experience w/ Nissan and Toyota (maybe even Lexus if it's not that far behind Toyota), but I'm hooked on BMW engineering. How everything is designed is very well-thought out and not as complicated as Nissan or Toyota. And if BMW shifted their focus on outsourcing parts that last as long as Nissan/Toyota parts, then they would be up the ranks in reliability. Then again, if they did that, then they would sacrifice their engineering.

    ///Michael.
