I am new to the world of porsche after leaving behind maserati. I recently took ownership of an 07 911 coupe with low mileage (12k). Shortly after taking possession, actually one day after a $250 pre purchase inspection and 2 year service paid for by seller, the battery/alternator warning light came on. I took it to the recommended local dealer and they said battery and alternator checked out great. They concluded that it must be the wire connecting the two. All covered under warranty...all good there. However the service advisor told me that due to the long and tortuous path that the wire needs to travel, it will take three days to get it done. Brought in on saturday, back to me on tuesday to wednesday??? I know it is a little thing, but this did not sound right. Any thoughts?

Did you have a scheduled service appointment, or not ? That counts for something because if you had an appointment, the service writer would then know what it was coming in for, and would try to block the time accordingly.

You brought it in on a Saturday and the problem was "tentatively" diagnosed....

    They are probably closed Sunday....

    They re-open Monday....

You get the car back Tuesday +/-....depends on whether or not they also find out that they need to order a part as well.

So far, so good, in my book anyways....

Don't know if you are aware of this, but in spring time most Porsche shops are booked anywhere from 2-14 days in advance. And "customer pay" usually always takes precedence over "warranty repair" as it generates more revenue per work order on a per unit parts and labor basis. As well, diagnosing an electrical repair on any make of car, versus fixing one, are two different things entirely and the 996/997 cars are well known for having problematic charging systems. The service writer was just building in more time for the work to cover off the "just in case" scenario......a smart move on his/her part.

There's nothing wrong with waiting 2-3 days, having serviced many a Porsche myself I consider that a good turn around time......after all, I never, ever, get into my doctor's office at the scheduled appointment time, nor does the dealer charge me $50 if I miss my apointment......

Thanks. I guess it is just frustrating to have owned what was billed as a "clean car" and have a problem less than 24 hours into ownership. Although I figured that warranty work typically gets "bumped", I was just a bit frustrated. I just want to drive the darn thing.

just a heads up, but there is a problem with 997s frying their ECUs right after battery replacement. Happened to me, covered under warranty, apparently pretty common.

I'm surprised it's the wire. I thought only Italians could install a piece of wire and have it arbitrarily and spontaneously fail somewhere in the middle.
