2008 430 default F1 auto/manual

I tried this on my US 2008 Spider and it didn't work. As soon as i turn off the ignition the Auto lamp turns back on, and that's how it starts up the next time.

Is there something I'm missing here? Are you simply saying that the car will remember the auto setting from the last time it was used, or is this 'start the car and don't shift into gear' procedure special in some way? In any case it doesn't work for me, and I would like to find a fix. The dealer also told me it couldn't be changed.

 

OK I tried it by holding down the Auto button as I turned off the ignition and now it's in the 'easy auto' mode with the down arrow.
