The tires had nothing to do with it. Kimi just overcooked the corner and went off. If everyone is going to call out Massa's F-ups, we need to do the same when Kimi screws up. Yes the tires were worn, but they idn't just magically lose all grip at once. Mark
Question remains, why wasn't he in the pits when the SC was out?! Edit: 11 remaining... Kimi on 11...*sigh*
haha, no excuses for that move. World Champion means you don't make a bonehead move because your teammate has thrown his race away. Looked like he didn't expect to be going as fast, perhaps from the draft off Heikki.
He just overcooked it. He thought he could late brake and even though that would kill his corner speed, it's a tight enough corner that Heiki would be forced to stay behind him through the turn. He miscalculated by probably 0.001% but that was enough to send him off... too bad for Kimi.
No, once pit lane opened the lap before the SC pulled in. Unless he had a lot of fuel left it seems like it would have been the best time to pit.
Pits reopen once all the cars are lined up behind the safety car though. He had a few laps to come in; several other cars stopped as soon as the the pits opened. Mark
You're so right. If Kimi's tires were not worn to nothing he still would have screwed up that pass. He has absolutely no idea what he's doing out there. I mean look at how he's driven the race so far...pathetic.
Pits close when the SC comes out to prevent teams from stacking cars in the pits. However, as they said on Speed, the order came down to open the pits while the SC was still on the track. Obviously they realized that half the pack would run out of petrol if they didn't.
Hindsight is 20/20... I bet Kimi knew he had enough fuel for a few more laps, and wanted to try to get Heiki on the restart. Had he pulled it off we'd be saying how smart it was It's one of those things that's all or nothing. He was in a position to sort of need to pull off a miracle for a shot at a win or 2nd place, and he boned it.
Yep, you are right - I was just talking about when he started to come in and swung back out on track. I bet the reason for not coming in was that he had fuel to do several laps and wanted a crack at Heiki....
No, it's based on the order from Charlie. It's not automatic... in this case it was a few laps before they opened the pits.
I guess the best thing that will come out of this race is that it looks like Kimi had the pace. He came within a few tenths of Hamilton's fastest lap and that was about 10 laps before he pitted, so he still had a lot of room for improvement. He was doing 1:27's until Heikki came out of this pits full of fuel and held him at 29's. With the amount of fuel he had left I would put him around 1:27.0
Hey what was DC's comment about Massa? Someone mentioned it earlier... I was cooking some food so if it was on TV I missed it....
