Detroit Festival of Speed and Style Returns to Downtown Detroit

2008 Show to Reprise Inaugural Event’s Formula of Showcasing Automotive History through Cars, Art and Music

Detroit, March 7, 2007 – The Detroit Festival of Speed and Style, widely praised for its new approach to communicating the Detroit area’s unique contribution to automotive heritage during its inaugural 2007 show, will return to downtown on August 8-10.
Marrying the excitement and speed of car cruises and races with the style and sophistication of a Concours d’Elegance, plus the added context of automotive art and local music, the Detroit Festival of Speed and Style celebrates the automobile and its historical contribution in an attractive and inclusive weekend show – with no admission charge.
Staged at Detroit’s remarkable Campus Martius and adjacent Cadillac Square, the Detroit Festival of Speed and Style presents cars and motorcycles in an urban setting, with the opportunity for moving parades and demonstrations. It also moves to a date earlier in August, placing it the weekend before the revered Woodward Dream Cruise, thereby providing automotive heritage buffs an action-packed two-week opportunity.
“For years we had dreamed about staging an event at Campus Martius and last year’s inaugural show wasn’t simply the realization of that dream, it was the start of a spectacular new concept that has been embraced by the automotive community,” said Marvin Towns, Jr. the Detroit Festival of Speed and Style’s creator and founder. “We are extremely proud that this free event brings together all people – regardless of age or social background – who love cars. Moreover, for this year’s event, we will be adding a significant new element, highlighting motorcycles, details of which we will announce shortly.”
The City of Detroit is a wholehearted supporter of the Detroit Festival of Speed and Style. “The 2007 Festival was a huge success,” said Kwame M. Kilpatrick, Mayor of Detroit. “I look forward to working with Marvin Towns on this year’s event, which is free to all and attracts enthusiasts to downtown from all over Michigan and the United States.”
The event model of the Detroit Festival of Speed grew out of Towns’ experience on the highly successful 2003 - 2005 Concours d’Elegance at Cranbrook, which Towns co-founded. Its entry of vehicles marries the finest examples of many of the world’s and nation’s classic cars with more recent machinery than typically seen at traditional Concours events. These include high performance factory-built cars from the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s, such as hot rods, tuner cars, unique motorcycles, race cars, trucks – and even today’s newer concept cars and alternative fuel vehicles.
To date, sponsor commitments have been made by: General Motors, GM Service Parts Operations, UAW Region 1A, the Detroit News, Delphi, Detroit Muscle, Meguiars, Great American Chopper and the Detroit Public Libraries/NAHC (National Automotive History Collection).
Civic partners include: the City of Detroit, Campus Martius-Detroit 300 Conservancy, Compuware, Motor Cities National Heritage Area, Ferndale Woodward Dream Cruise, the Metro Detroit Convention and Visitors Bureau, Michigan Hispanic Chambers of Commerce, Mexicantown Community Development Center, Quick Kool, Southwest Michigan Community Council and Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix Alliance.
Proceeds from the Detroit Festival of Speed and Style fund raisers will benefit Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit and Young Nation.
