So I'm thinking about punching myself in the head repeatedly and buying a BMW again. My buddy is selling his 2009 M6. I wouldn't normally have thought of it, though it always looks great, but the best part is that its actually a 6spd manual. The thought of owning a 6spd V10 is intoxicating. He has all the service records, repairs, etc. It has 97k on it. Besides the usual wear items like clutch and tires, the only thing I hear about is rod bearings. I'll be getting those changed most likely just for piece of mind. Anything else I need to think about?

Im afraid I don't have any info to offer, but I would agree that the idea of a 500 hp NA V10 and 6 speed manual sounds wonderful.

Whats it cost to replace the rod bearings?

It depends. I've seen quotes from a BMW dealer up to $5k, but we know how those go. I have a friend with an exotic car shop and I think I can get it done for about $1500. Small price to pay for saving a $10k + engine.

Yeah that's pretty reasonable. I was almost afraid to ask because that's such an invasive thing to have done. I would imagine getting that engine out and apart would be pretty labor intensive.

The v10 is better with the Smg 7 speed. Gears 2 and 3 in the 6sd manual make up for gears 2 3 and 4 in the Smg. Gears 1 567 match gears 1 456 in the manual. The engine needs to rev. to make power. It's a great car either way but was designed with the 7 sd. Good luck.

As drivers cars they are just awesome I have owned four M cars plus a 2002TII.

The BMW s seem to have electrical problems in 4th year after it is produced. Most shops ca fix these.

They are rocket ships with great handling. I would have a PPI done before I bough it. They can be expensive to repair.

    I just bought a 2008 M3 and I love it.

    Good luck and enjoy

I had a 07 SMG, and it depends on what you expect of it. I did a long list of mods to mine but in the end it was still a bit too big and heavy to be what I wanted. I had no issues with it other that a couple electronic hiccups in the beginning. Funny thing is I have 2013 650 coupe (with Dinan Stage 1 and shockware) running lightweight 19" wheels and I think it is faster and handles way better than the M6 ever did even after I spent 20K upgrading it.

You're correct IMHO. The M6 with 6 speed manual is a better way to go than the SMG in that year car. I owned one with SMG back then and hated it. Lag lag lag. Otherwise the car is solid. Go for it.

I was at my local independent BMW shop today for an oil change and they had a V10 M5 in for rod bearings and associated carnage. They said the poor SOB's bill is going to be in the $20's.

That hurts. That's probably 50% of the cars value.

Actually that's 90% of what I was going to pay. So my buddy decided to keep it for six more months.
