    Why is it the whiniest?

    He is 100% on target.

To call it a world championship, it should be a battle among nations, not clubs.

You can call them world champions when the US of A have won in American Football over whatever other country.

    And........ ;)

Ok, last post on this digression, but is there a team in the world that is better than the Saints?

    Didn't think so...

No - I've said it in *multiple* posts - They are undeniably the best National Football League team in the world right now.

Where we beg to differ is I disagree that just because you're the best at your sport automatically makes you a WC. In my opinion that's simply not true.

I have the same problem with the MLB "World Series" - Sure, the team that wins is (probably) the best baseball team on the planet, but they've only beaten national (OK, plus Canada before I get yelled at!) competition.

Now, the nascient "World Baseball Classic" could lead to a genuine WC as it's nation -v- nation.

    Cheers,
    Ian

Maybe a German team? WHo knows until they have tried to play each other.

Now it would be interesting to see the best team from Europe play against the Super Bowl winner. Just to get an idea about the difference.

    Sorry, but no it wouldn't!

Any team from outside the NFL (including the best of the college guys IMHO) is going to be severely embarrassed - It wouldn't even be close - Those guys are *good* - Indeed, the best in the world. But WC's? Not in my take on worldwide sports championships.

Americans go play in the German leagues when they can't make it on a team in the US... same with Basketball. And any German that is good enough will get signed by a NFL team for way more more money than they would make in Germany.

The money is in the USA. It is what it is, whether you call it arrogant or not, we attract the best athletes in the world for our pro sports teams/leagues (with the exception of football and F1). But hey, even David Beckham is living in the US now for the money... only problem is soccer is still too boring for American fans and MLS is struggling.

+1 I believe there are a few ex-soccer and Aussie rules kickers doing pretty well in the NFL. And quite a lot, and increasing, basketball players.

Again, I'll agree (apart from the last sentence - uncalled for ;)). But boat-loads of money doesn't make the champions of any sport worthy of the title of world champions. IMHO, the sport must be played, at the highest level in or by many nations, who compete at some point, to determine a WC.

International championships are typically (but don't have to be) contested between nations. Soccer (sorry!) tries with the "World club championship", but no one outside of die-hard fans gives a damn. Soccer, at the highest level, is contested between nations. As is cricket, the olympic sports, rugby, badminton, squash etc etc......

As to a German and/or European league, didn't they shut up shop a few years back? - The NFL owners spent lots and lots of money trying to get it going, but it turned into "NFL light" with mainly "junior" (or over the hill?) players being tried out. Nothing wrong with that, but even the best of the best in NFL Europe would get spanked by any NFL team [OK, maybe not the Raiders or Lions ;)]

There just isn't any international interest in the sport, and without that you can't be a WC.

    Now I'm done! Cheers,
    Ian

As stated earlier, No team in THE WORLD is better than The Saints at this moment...

    WORLD Champions

and while we are at it, Alabama is WORLD Champions in college football too.

Being from the greatest and most powerful country on the planet gives us this bragging right. Anyone in the UK want to prove me wrong? Go put together a (real) football team, bring them over here and shut us up. Until you or any other country can do that, we are World Champions.

    WORLD champions.

You never know. We have seen smaller teams upset big teams before ;)

The argument in this entire thread about calling them world champions is interesting.

Using the logic that because they have won the NFL, then they are world champions, must tell the same people that it should be named appropiately. Padded Rugby, hand-egg, handball or whatever, and not FOOTBALL, because he has very little to do with football.

The only football oon this planet is the one played by the likes of Steven Gerrard, David Beckham, Thierry Henry, ROnaldo, David Villa etc.
It also happens to be the most popular and powerful sport bar none.

This thread has taken an interesting turn. Does anyone remember back when the College All Starts used to play the NFL Champions? They even played the Superbowl Champs a couple of times. So would the winner be the best in the world?

We agreed that *pages* back. Over and over again. I guess you simply don't get it - "Best in the world" does *NOT* equate to WC - Is it that hard to understand that in order to be a WC, you have to beat others that give a **** about your sport?

I'm going to assume that as you are "rossa subscribed" you are allowed to make such BS comments and/or go trolling with impunity. Your comments are, at best, a joke, and at worst trolling, which last I checked was a bannable offense.....

Being the best in a sport does not necessarily make you a WC IMO. [I am the WC doohickey-nerfer for example. Who cares?]

*Please* tell me the above is a joke, right? Do you even *read* what others have to say about your comments?

We all agreed pages back that the Saints are the best NFL team in existence right now - They are the *national* champions. So what? - They can beat a part time beer league team from Germany?

What you don't seem to understand is that *nobody* outside of the USA gives a damn..... "World champions"? - If the world begins and ends within these shores then maybe - But, guess what, there's a whole other *world* out there, and nations (even including the USA) compete for the right to be called WC's in whatever sport - The NFL is a national championship - As I've said before, a very good one, but it's a long way from being a WC.

Oh yeah, that's right - college kids can't even play the same game as the pros - the best in that sport are also WC's. WTF!? You can only have a single WC in any sport - You know what - soccer rules remain the same at whatever level you're playing - If you beat everyone else, then you're the WC. But here in the USA, you can have college WC's, national WC's and probably even pee-wee WC's. There is only one WC in *all* of the internationally recognized sports - Swimming, rugby, cricket, et al.

Who would win if the college WC's played the NFL world champs? You can only have one WC after all - Unless it's a different game of course. [One played by kids, one played by "men", unless you don't get it.]

"World champions" will be determined soon in the upcoming Olympics and the upcoming World Cup in South Africa. "I'm American and therefore the most powerful nation on earth, and therefore have the WC's" (in a sport no one else cares about) is about as ignorant, arrogant and stupid as I've read - Anywhere.

As I said, I'm hoping you're simply trying to wind the rest of world up. Stupid, ignorant, and, as I've said above, gives the sport of American Football a very bad name - I happen to enjoy it, I've said that *many* times. But WC's - BS.

Well, the Super Bowl winners are the WORLD CHAMPIONS until someone wins the next Super Bowl - or like in F1, sues in court to disallow the use of the name 'World Champion', just like how F1 sues anyone that uses the name 'Grand Prix'.

Ian - YOU must care because YOU are the one that fired up this mess, and YOU are the one that continues to stoke the flames.

And, I have NEVER heard of a 'college world champion' in anything. Please post a link to discredit me.

Are you really claiming that Jimmy J is a WC? They don't even race outside of the USA and the occasional foray into Canada & Mexico. You've got to be an American manufacturer to even get an entry - Toyota is now as American as GM and Ford, which is how they got in. "World Championship!" - BS.

Absolutely - They're national champions in a sport the rest of the world doesn't care about. An international (ie, world) champion has beaten others, from other countries. The NFL is just that - a national championship.

I'll say it again - "best in the world" does not a WC make *unless* other nations give a damn and chose to compete in said sport. Sorry.

No one else can possibly win the superbowl - It's a *national* tournament put on by the teams owners. Sure, I've said time and again they are the best there is at that national sport but they're simply not WC's.

Please see post [EDIT #159 - sorry] above.

    Indeed - I do care - passionately - As you've noted ;)

The NFL has a great product that I enjoy immensely. But just because the Saints are the kings of said championship does not, IMHO, make them WC's. The rest of the world has to want to compete, at the highest level, as I said before, prior to the champs being legitimate WC's. [See, any olympic sport, soccer etc for relevant examples of sports in which the victor can call themselves a WC.]

If you want to believe that being the "best" in a sport that nobody else cares about makes you a WC then all I can do is respectfully disagree. That's all.

Well, tried to play nice and end the tiff, but it was too heated and people jumped back in to keep it going.

Posts deleted. Too many personal attacks and this is not the "Politics & Religion" forum.

If anyone on EITHER side brings back up politics or personal insults then it will result in a temporary vacation from F-chat.

    Less drama, more fun!

    Indeed.

Horse -> dead -> flog...... [The reason I dropped out btw]

However, I am little disappointed you also deleted my post in which I responded to whisky's "can the UK beat the US" comment (#165) - As I said therein, I'm still not sure how or why this turned into a "UK -v- USA" thread. But, I am looking forward to (dreading?) the US -v- UK soccer match that opens the WC in a few months....

    No biggie, Cheers,
    Ian
