From PlanetF1 Pirelli has warned that their supersofts tyres are likely to last less than 10 laps at this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix. The Italian tyre manufacturer's supersoft rubber will make its F1 debut on the streets of Monte Carlo. The soft option, which has been used at every race this season, will also be available to teams. The high degradation of the Pirelli tyres has resulted in plenty of on-track entertainment as drivers pushing too hard on the soft compound often lose their way if they stay out too long. Drivers will have to be even more careful this weekend on the supersofts as it is likely to last less than 10 laps, but they will have some joy in qualifying if they opt for just one flying lap. In a preview for the race the supplier said: "While not quite a qualifying tyre, it still provides the ultimate performance offered by any of the PZero line-up. One of its characteristics is the remarkably short warm-up time, meaning that all the performance is available right from the beginning, but its extremely soft compound consistency means that it has an anticipated range of fewer than 10 laps: even less at the beginning of a race when the cars are full of approximately 200 litres of fuel. With the Monaco street circuit characterised by few overtaking opportunities, qualifying is of crucial importance." Pirelli's motorsport director Paul Hembery added: "The supersoft rubber is designed to provide outstanding performance over a short period of time but this comes at the price of durability, so all the teams will have to consider their strategies carefully. Getting it right will make the difference between winning and losing. "For longer runs, the PZero Yellow has already proven itself to be a reliable and popular product so far this year, contributing to extremely close racing while providing the drivers with all the confidence they need to push to the maximum."
Ferrari's technical director Aldo Costa has relinquished his position as the team's technical director on the back of a disappointing start to the season, the Maranello squad announced on Tuesday.
Alonso puts Ferrari on top in FP2 By Matt Beer Thursday, May 26th 2011, 13:32 GMT Fernando Alonso put Ferrari on top in the second Thursday practice session for the Monaco Grand Prix. The Spaniard led the way for the majority of the afternoon, staying ahead of McLaren's Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes' Nico Rosberg and the second McLaren of Jenson Button, while championship leader Sebastian Vettel's Red Bull was back in fifth. Alonso's session began with a near-miss when he almost ran into the back of team-mate Felipe Massa in the Swimming Pool section as the Brazilian cruised around on a slower lap. Intra-team disaster averted, Alonso took the top spot next time around. That 1m16.408s lap stood as the best until drivers started switching to super soft tyres mid-way through the session. Vettel briefly hit the front then, but only for a few minutes before Alonso blitzed the champion's time by half a second with a 1m15.123s that would go unbeaten. His rivals edged closer, with Vettel pushed back to fifth behind Hamilton, Rosberg and Button, but Alonso's time kept him in front. Massa also showed good pace to take sixth, while Michael Schumacher came back from his morning crash to go seventh for Mercedes. After missing the morning with a gearbox issue, Mark Webber had KERS troubles on the way to eighth this afternoon. Adrian Sutil (Force India) and Nick Heidfeld (Renault) completed the top 10. There were fewer incidents than in first practice, although Vitaly Petrov slid into the barriers on the approach to the chicane and did minor damage to his Renault, and Jaime Alguersuari did likewise to his Toro Rosso at Sainte Devote, where Williams's Pastor Maldonado and Lotus's Heikki Kovalainen (twice) visited the run-off without drama. Paul di Resta's session was ended by a mechanical problem - the Force India losing drive after 35 minutes. Tonio Liuzzi did not take part in the session, hydraulic issues being discovered while the Hispania crew repaired the damage from his morning incident. Pos Driver Team Time Laps 1.
