Not to hijack the thread too badly, but since we're somewhat on the topic:

How is the hotel situation during the weekend of the Historic GP?

I'm hoping to actually book a hotel in Monaco for that weekend, if possible. Also looked at the ticket prices (which are ridiculously low) and thought I might buy a few to get access to different stands. Are these tickets normally selling out or can I wait till raceday?

Historic GP is usually two weeks before the real GP

Ticket availability was fine for 2010 Historic GP right up to the day : busy & atmospheric but not full

Hotels were booked out & hiked as soon as the dates were announced but less than for the F1GP & with some returns in the preceeding month

Then you should reserve for 2012 ASAP. Hard to imagine that GP week wouldn't be blacked-out in any case, regardless of status, but if you can pull this off, go for it- might as well use your reward in a time that would otherwise cost a fortune!

May, 2012 (the Historics are only held every other year, and were last held in 2010, so . . .), probably two weeks before the GP.

I leave for Milano then driving with friends to stay in a nice apt in Cannes for race weekend. I took suggestions from others and booked the helicopter into Monaco for race day. I bought my tickets back in November where Ira suggested....top row grandstands in the harbor seats.

Since this is my 1st time for the GP in Monaco are there any must see places, restaurants, bars, etc during race weekend? I have been to Monaco before and did the Casino, but am looking for other special places to visit or patronize.

    Any suggestions would be welcome.

Lunch at Rascasse on Sunday at around 1pm would be nice. ;)

Seriously, you need to go to Stars (down on the pier in the harbor, near Rascasse). It is a living museum to F1. Here a pic:

I've never been there, but Coulthard owns a hotel in Monaco. I bet it has some F1 memorabilia as well.

I envy you, particularly the part about the helicopter. Very kewl!

Right now it's in the planning stage. It's our thirty fifth anniversary at the end of next May and are thinking about doing another BMW euro delivery. Monaco should fit the schedule nicely.
    I'll keep you posted.

Uh oh. But aren't you going the wrong direction from Munich? Shouldn't you be headed NW towards the Nordschleife and eventually Rotterdam?

Then again: I wouldn't mind driving a Beemer along the Promenade des Anglais.

PS: We also have a big anniversary to celebrate. So doing it in Monegasse style seems appropriate. :)

The cars ship from there but you either D/O back in Munich or they P/U in certain other cities. Last time we left it in Milan.

    Ausgezeichnet!

PS: Last time I left a car in Milan it missed all the luggage after a 5 minute stop at McDonalds...

    Who sneezed? ;)
Thanks. It makes for a great vacation trip and when someone asks how fast my car is I can honestly say "150 but I've never had it much past 135". :)

BMW blanched a bit when we mentioned that Italy was on the itinerary :)

Here's why: remember these three important words: super soft tires

these tires will utterly disintegrate in 5 laps time making anyone on them for longer than 6 laps sitting ducks. The lap time drop is a magnificent 2.5-3 seconds. Get ready

It will be interesting to see if Monaco's traditional emphasis on qualifying position holds.

If they only last 5 laps, then expect people to only do 5 laps on them and spend the entire race doing long stints on the prime compound. If they're not sliiiiiightly more durable than that, then they won't affect the race outcome.

I think it will. The space is so tight in Monaco with no run-offs, qualifying will always be king. The only way to really overtake is with a pitstop strategy.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

I believe the only available tires will be super soft and soft. Going to be an interesting race :D

With three or four stops it will be a factor. Anyone know what the pit delta is there?

I understand some cars will be fitted with a snow plow style device. Those not keeping the pace will be relegated to Zamboni duty.

Have fun! Have a look down at Cavallari Motors (Ferrari dealer): 11, Rue Princesse Florestine. If you just walk along the track there should be enough to see ;)

Don't forget to post some pictures!

Thanks to all for the suggestions for me while in Monaco. We have invites to some very fancy pre-race party on Friday night....supposedly some F1 drivers will be there.....we'll see. My Italian friends asked if I would bring my helmut to get signed.....nope.....I am not lugging a helmet overseas for an autograph or two!

After race weekend we are off to Puglia for a week at a seaside villa......this should be a nice trip.

That's exactly what I was thinking. If any one of the leaders steps a toe off the line their tires are goners. It's going to be the best Monaco GP in a long time.
