http://www.porsche.com/usa/ http://www.motorauthority.com/blog/1037879_2011-porsche-boxster-spyder-preview I really like the idea behind this car... No A/C, No Cupholders, No Radio, No Door Handle Releases... A pure performance oriented roadster. I think they could've given it more HP but then it would be even closer to 911 territory. I'd post more but I'm on my phone. What are your thoughts?
At this point I have no idea, next time I'm at the Porsche dealer I'll ask them and see if they can give any info on the next generation Boxster because they just facelifted the regular boxsters... Should be a new generation out within the next couple years.
It's a nice idea, but it may not be commercially viable, especially if Porsche follows history and charges more for less. Lotus has difficulty selling Elises at their price point and they at least have air and a few comforts that could convince fans of spartan motoring that it could be used as a daily driver.
Believe me... Lotuses might as well not have a/c or a radio. The a/c blows warm on a hot day and I can't hear the radio at highway speeds. The a/c and radio are just dead weight.
It's brilliant. Drop 200 lbs from the Boxster, add 10 bhp, and give it an evocative name. Aluminum doors, cool graphics, cool fairing, classic door pulls, manual seats ... I'd to see it even lighter Looks fantastic from the rear -- much improved over the lumpy original Boxster backside. This is what the Boxster should have been all about. Original lit in 1997 compared it to the old 550 Spyder, but when you have power seats, leather everything, automatic power top, sat nav, a/c, Tiptronic, power windows, etc., it's obviously not a Spyder or a Speedster. A nice step in the right direction, but drop another 200 lbs, donate a few bhp from the 997 and you'll have a giantkiller.
So long to my trusty 986. Methinks I'll be placing a deposit on one of these ASAP. It looks like this might be Porsche's first step in doing penance for the Panamera.
+1, looks great in black! good to see Porsche doing something cool with the Boxster; that car seems to have been the forgotten stepchild of late.
I'm absolutely in love with this thing. I've been pretty aggressively Ferrari shopping lately, but this just may keep me in the Porsche camp for a little while longer. Love the rear, LOVE the idea...yes Porsche, keep this type of stuff coming!!
Done a few regular 996 engine swaps (296 HP stock) into an early (and much lighter than the current) Boxster S chassis........all I can say is WOW !!!! We added Fabspeed headers, a Fabspeed sport muffler, cat bypass, ECU flash, air intake and you've got 330 real HP.......up from the early Boxster S rating of 247........yeeeehaaaahhh !!! And you'll have spent $35K USD instead of the $65K needed for this one........
What Porsche should do is up the horsies and use this new lighter (aluminum doors, sport seats, etc.) platform. Power is part of the Boxster's problem, but frankly all the luxury garbage in these cars is the real issue. Most modern cars have enough power to move their excessive bulk (e.g., BMW M6, Ferrari 599), but it's just better not to have that bulk to start with, IMHO. The Spyder is the right idea, but as always with Porsche the marketing people can't afford to let anything eclipse the 997. A Boxster with even the base 997 engine would be a brutal joy on any road.
Boxster Spyder promo video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEtZR0zgBnA&feature=channel Looks like they hit home run with this one.
It seems nicely planted to the road in the video. I'm heading to the dealer later this week to get the down-low on it & see if they're accepting deposits. We were considering swapping our 986 for an RS60 but this one renders that decision moot. I'll take mine in white with blue decals ala... Image Unavailable, Please Login
