I was just looking at the new M6 and I must say for $106k MSRP it seems like a good buy, when comparing it to the competiton. The SL63 willl set you back $140k, which has 30 less HP. The New Carrera S is in the same price range but has 160 HP less. Now the Carerra is 800lb lighter which is substantial, but the new Porsche is more of an everyday luxury sports car. Everyone is excited about the new M5, but I think the M6 is a sleeper. Plus I think it even looks better than the M5, especially the interior.

My friends dad owns the previous gen. M6 convertible, he just drove the new M6 convertible a few days ago at the dealer that my buddy now works at.

He said that he loves it and it drives like a champ, but he still wants to go back to Porsche and get a 991 S. Not sure why though, his whole garage is full of BMWs and his toy was always a Porsche.

I told him to go try out the GT-R as well, unless you are looking for a convertible.

Both are wonderful cars. Bascially it comes down to what do you want, a family refined hot rod or a world class sports car. Tough decision :)

I hope he Enjoys whatever he buys :)

Something to keep in mind. The previous generation M6 got killed in resale value. Great car but you can get a used one super cheap. If you plan on trading it in after a year or so keep that in mind.

While the M6 may be marginally faster, the new Audi RS5 looks a lot better, has better build quality, AWD, ~ $25k less expensive, much rarer and will have much better resale value. While I have owned numerous M cars, including an e36 M3 and e34, e39 & e60 M5s, I hated the e60 M5 and haven't liked an M car since the e46 M3.

    What he said.

If you must buy new, I think a lightly optioned Carrera S would be the one to have.

I owned a 07 M6 (had about 35k in mods done to it), even after that it was no sports car, and it was certainly no Porsche. It was fast, but as far as handling, well if you're looking for that the Porsche is in a different world. The back seats of the new 6 are not huge, they are fine for smaller kids. NEVER judge any car by just how much horsepower it has, that might matter on a dragster, but on a road car it is how the car puts the power to the ground. Good luck, but I'd buy a Porsche!

6 series cars have terrible resale. Don't buy or finance a new one. If you really want one wait for a month when BMW financial has good money factors and high residuals and lease it. You will get killed on the 650 or m6 if you own it. This is why BMW usually offers bad lease numbers on m cars as they know what the market is like. Same applies to amg cars and mb financial knows it and charges crazy lease numbers since the cars are hard to move at lease end If you are going to buy go with the Porsche as it will hold its value better especially since 991 is a new body style.

I would but the 911 Porsche over the BMW. I would also get the Turbo why not it is not my money :)

I am not sure why or even if the M cars lose so much value. But my experience is limited I only had an early M3 and it did not have that problem. The only fault of the car was the maintenace costs. Some took my breath away. The car was so highly tuned that the plug wires hsd to be replaced before 10k miles. The cost was $1,000 dollars and at the time $18 dollars was the norm. This was more than 20 years ago.

Also the heads would crack at 10,000 miles and cost $10 grand ro buy a new one.

This is all old stuff and I am sure it has changed for the better. But for driving fun it could not be bested. Anyway maybe this still exists with the M cars in some degree and this is why they lose value.

Buy the Porsche, they are wonderful cars and hold value very well. i have owned 3 new ones and my current old one I got at Mecum. even tho it is a 2002 turbo it drives as it did when new, just amazing engineering!
