Franz Tost, Toro Rosso Team Principal, said in a TV interview that Max was correct, they were wrong, and Sainz could not have passed Perez. Onno
Yes, they did say that to save face, in my opinion. That's the best way to stop the polemic. It was just a PR exercise, sort of damage limitation, in my book.
Were the commentators correct? Did Vettel just match the number of wins in the first year with Ferrari that Schumacher did?
Yes. Schumacher had 3 wins in his first year at Ferrari. BUT... Ferrari was completely in the wilderness for years before Schumacher showed up. It's really not a worthwhile stat.
Correct. He had all of his wins prior to the 1994 season and dnf'd in the three events that year. Hamilton did have the opportunity to match his wins in the same number of starts, but that's now gone. It will be interesting to see where Vettel and Hamilton end up. Each has a great chance to surpass Prost...not certain which one will end up with the more victories between the two. With Ferraris improvement, there isn't quite the specter of Hamilton dominating next year.
+1...Ferrari had 25 years of nothing prior to Schumacher. The 310b wasn't nearly the car that Vettel has. Vettel is just penalized by Merc's dominance.
Allison really brought his gift of making cars incredibly sweet on tires to the team didn't he. Ferrari will be strong next year as well, but remember they have about a full second to find on Mercedes at a normal track, and Merc isn't sitting on their hands. If I were Arrivabene, I'd get my team ready for full attack mode in 2017 when there's a bit of a shake up. Trying to develope a ferrari for 2016 that finds this season's 3/4 of a second combined what however much time Mercedes finds during the winter with their new car (usually half a second or so) will be futile for Ferrari's 2016. Not saying it can't be done, but ferrari would be better served beginning their 2017 development and hitting that hard just as Merc started doing way back in 2012 for the all dominant W05. That all said, I believe Merc may just find a big heap of time with W07 as I hear they are incorporating Ferrari's clever radiator arrangement which itself is a very nice flow advantage. Since ferrari already have it, they better find some additional tricks or 2016 will be business as usual for the silver arrows.
In the 25 years prior to Schumacher's arrival, Ferrari took 3 World Drivers Champoinships, and won 6 World Constructors Championship. Ferrari also came runner-up at least 8 times in the WCC during that period and missed the WDC a few times. I wouldn't call that nothing.
The Ferrari was rubbish the year before Vettel joined. Same with Schumacher. Ok..it was rubbish for longer pre MS, but still....... Also Vettel is well on the way to beating all of Schumacher's achievements...but there's a LONG way to go. Vettel already won two more titles than MS in the previous team. Now he's equalled MS first year in Ferrari.....what I DON'T know, is how those numbers compare with seasons competing and age. Does anyone know? it'd be an interesting statistic.
I could see that as a possibility, as it crossed my mind too. My only counterpoint is teams make those calls and generally have a team first attitude so nothing to save face about. However, I could be persuaded to buy into your book very easily as they did seem to get questioned very quickly on why the call was made.
We don't know exactly what's the policy about team orders at Toro Rosso, but Sainz said this: "This year I have let him by three or four times. He was told to let me by four times and didn't. It's a bit of a pain." Now, there may be bad blood between the 2 young team mates.
Actually, they won the constructors championships in '82 and '83 and would have most likely had the drivers too in '82 but for the accidents to Villeneuve and Pironi. Alboreto finished second in '85.
First race since I started following F1 in 1999 that I didn't finish watching. 7:00am Sunday morning used to be the highlight of my week. Now it's just another Sunday. Slept in. IMO Joe
That true...the kerbs was just too high for Massa to go on the left. And, he kept within the rules, and stayed in the white line. I think Hulk probably got a bit excited and turned into him. Could have been avoided, but i think it's stupid to punish the hulk so severely. A warning could have settled this.
But the gap was 21 years. I can't even recall who finished second in the WDC during that period. Fast forward to now...the last champion was Kimi, 2007..8 years ago. However, in between, we had so many 2nd finishes, which probably boiled down to silly pit strategies over the years. I think Ferrari were really bad just for 2009, and 2013.
Alboretto was 2nd in the WDC in 1985, and Prost the same in 1990. Ferrari supporters expect it to win every year, or it's a catastrophe for them. It's just not realistic, IMO.
It's the same everywhere if you are a top team. I expect Manchester United to win the league every year. Real Madrid fans expect the team to win the champions league every year. No surprises here. I agree with your conclusion, but this is life.
This is the problem with supporters, fans, or tifosis; they are illogical., as far as I can see. They forget the sport, the game, the competition and are only interested in their team, their side, their club to win. I find that very tribal, and not sportman like. Myself, I want to see a race, without any real favourite. I like it when the result is not predictable, or when there is a surprise, or a different driver/team emerges and challenges the established order. I used to find it so boring during the Schumacher era, and later the Red Bull era. I want different winners, variety, etc...
Sorry, didn't go through the entire thread but am I the only conspiracy theorist regarding Mercs' race?
Nope...just no outward signs that anyone can see. Their sudden loss of form defies logic and Hamilton didn't seem too upset about his dnf.
