Agreed. These V6's are.........ok....i guess? I don't hate them, but man they're meh. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I'm SO SO glad my first F1 race will be one of the last NA shrieking V8 races....
I counter that opinion with my own opinion as some of us who are "real F1 fans" do not base our judgment of F1 merely on the sound of the engine. I do not feel bad for F1 as much as I do for the misguided and ignorant newbie fan base. Your skirt does not match your pumps.
If the new turbos were allowed to grenade at unlimited revs, F1 would be far more interesting. Bring back DNFs... The best era of F1 racing, imho, were the early eighties. The quickest times in qualifying meant relatively little and were a far cry from the automatic podiums they often guarantee today. Spectators during this time frame will easily attest naturally aspirated 650 hp DFZs were notably louder than the 1000+ hp 4/6/8 cylinder turbos of the day. As a denominator of fan interest in F1, engine dBs will remain a tertiary concern at best. No one, outside of the die hard fringe, will notice the difference year to year.
You agree with me on one thing and disagree on another. Cool. The engines don't seem to have cool cutting edge or interesting tech and they do not sound good.
Really fantastic post, I couldn't agree more. As a side note, I have stood next to a Cosworth DFV on a dyno, what a fantastic engine they are even today. Hobbyists can run them very easily not to mention they are stout motors which will easily go a long long time if they're not constantly being run at full tilt. I believe this engine was Ferrari's inspiration for the flat plane 308 V8 engine series and their entire engine series moving forward to modern day, it all started there. A super-beefed up racing 4 valve 308 engine with ITB injection sounds *exactly* like a DFV engine in race trim, it's awesome. I have a customer running one in his Michelotto car which makes some 400+bhp, and it's street driveable !
I heard DFY(520hp), DFZ(560hp), and DFR's(630hp) all race alongside the best turbo's and it made for a nice contrast. I especially liked the sound effect my 1st year in Montreal sitting at the hairpin front row area where the cars would come in fast but decelerating hard and then nail it out of the apex. They were NOT louder, they just had a higher pitch as did all the later NA engines. Nothing was louder than than the 86/87 turbo's. A cannon going off will always be louder than a scream. Your 2nd point, FAN - in person or on TV? in person sound is BIG in fact requiring hearing protection in most cases (can't remember if i used it or not) but so is smell. The turbo's used a very special rocket fuel that gave off a very unique exhaust odor. That was also very important in person. On TV it is more LOOKS, does the car look good, and handling, ex. drifting. Senna's crazy lap in Aus.
I heard the new F1 engine this morning. No, wait, my son is on fall break from college and he was using an electric toothbrush. Nevermind.
The only thing I can emphasize is, get to Austin (or one of th other races) before this year is done.....end of an era that will never return.
The season is so boring and predictable now that I've decided not to even go to Austin. I had plans and everything.
I wouldn't let that hold you back; the experience of being there is not east to describe. Aside from Vettel there has been great racing throughout the field Kevin
I've been to plenty of V10 races. Everything sort of falls short of that so I'm not crying about the V8s really.
You're literally the only person that thinks this. We've already tried to explain the science behind why you're wrong, but hey, whatever.

Literally, me and Berger and Mansell and Piquet and Brundle ............... but you're the expert ............ Whatever is right, move on
Links to where they said the turbo era cars were the loudest ever? Thanks for playing. Don't make me link that thread where you said the McLaren Mp4/4 from '88 could out accelerate a V10 from '04. LOL, you're always good for a laugh, Vin As far as moving on,you could consider taking your own advice. A guy can't even think about posting a thread talking about a turbo F1 car without you showing up. It's pretty incredible, like you have a radar for this sort of thing.
