Because it's obvious from a screen cap that Ovechkin initially hit the hands... you concede that now.

In the 1/2 a second or so that this took place, Ovechkin couldn't have hacked twice. He hit the head and shoulder as a result of their paths and the stick deflecting. It's clear in full motion video that Ovechkin slashes one time, it's clear from the still that the initial contact was the hands.

You're missing my point which was: Ovechkin went for the hands and was not malicious. I gave no opinion about the force of the slash.

That was all, and that was how I saw and still see it.

Another bull**** call to finish the game. Washington is not fans of the refs

I conceded that from the beginning, but said it was a tap and not a slash/hack.

Ok, I gotcha now, I thought you were implying that Ovie slashed/hacked the hands. We agree on that then :)

That was absolutely embarrassing. The referee called penalty based on the reaction of the player, instead of calling what he actually saw.

That is akin to calling a goal when the players raise their stick to celebrate even though the goalie has it covered outside the goal line.

Check out Coach's Corner where Cherry has a good slow mo and some talk about / examples of Niskanen.

The pundits have been arguing about this endlessly, so we're not alone...

this practice of snapping your head back whenever a stick comes anywhere above a player's shoulders should get two minutes...just live a diving or embellishment call that's on the books. They learned this from the soccer players, who collapse and writhe in pain whenever they are hit on or below the knee. The viewer thinks "My God, that guy's crippled for life!" and ten seconds later he's up running like a deer.

I understand that that call was hard to see from behind. The league could do more to enforce it's own policy, although after the fact:

"Hockey Operations will review game videos and assess fines to players who dive or embellish a fall or a reaction, or who feign injury."

That is the point I was trying to make in my post above. If the referee doesn't see it, then he cannot call it. Take it from a referee, we are taught "if you do not see it then do not call it".

Perhaps this will help explain it better:

If the referee does not see the puck cross the goal line, yet the players are celebrating that it's a goal, does the referee call it a goal? Absolutely not, if we do not see it cross the line, then it's not a goal, and it's no different than last night's play....if you don't see a high stick, don't call a high stick, we have to be 100% certain before we make that call.... especially in a playoff game where the stakes are sky high.

In summary, call what you see, don't call based on a players reaction. It isn't a guessing game, but unfortunately they turned it into one last night.

    Go DUCKS!

Funniest thing I saw all week was Wayne Gretsy sitting back in his seat and mouthing very clearly "the F word" in slo-mo following the OT loss last night.

Is anyone else watching the Ducks;Oilers game? Holy smokes I almost turned it off when it was 3-0 with about 5 minutes left. Then Anaheim scored 3 goals in the last 3 minutes to tie. Unreal.

I can't see this game ending without an Anaheim victory, like the Leafs collapse to Boston 4 years ago.

And Anaheim completes the improbable comeback.

If you're Edmonton, how do you recover from this?

If you're Anaheim, you have to ride this high and finish them off on Sunday.

    DUCKS WIN!

Honestly probably the best comeback playoff win of all time.

3 EMPTY NET goals in 3:01 seconds. Unbelievable.

And I almost missed it. I was sure this game was over and I was about to turn it off. Then the first goal so I had to keep watching...

I agree that it's the best come back ever in the playoffs. 3 goals in the last 3 minutes, all with no goalie. I don't think that's ever happened

For sure an amazing comeback. If i wasnt an oilers fan fir this one i woukd gave enjoyed it a lot more. The enegery tonight will be in the oilers favour. One of tge best crowds to play in front of.

Nashville did exactly what we expected but kudos to STL for making it this far.

Washington pretty much creamed Pittsburgh tonight. The game was 5-2 but really it was 5-0 until about 5 minutes left.

We have two game 7's tomorrow, and they are spread out so we can watch both (unless first game goes into quadruple OT).

Does it get any better than this?
