Agree. If you are going to ice it, may as well try for the net and ice (pun intended) the game while you're at it.

Another fundamental chance is pulling the goalie with a few minutes left (as much as 3 minutes left) as opposed to waiting the traditional 1 minute. Patrick Roy began this trend a few years ago when he coached Colorado.

Of course when it works it is a great thing and when it doesn't it sucks :). I just felt that something about the way the Predators played made pulling the goalie feel like a bad idea, and after game 5, to me, it wasn't worth the risk.

Right Mike. I forgot the analytics guys who figured this out. Optimum time to pull goalkeeper turned out to be something like 2:38 left in the game with offensive zone face off. The instruction to ice it (to defensive team) in one goal game also depends on how fresh the troops are and also coaches now usually have two pretty good face off guys on the ice late in games in case one gets booted.

Agree again. Don't forget about guys who have broken sticks that need replacing or the goaltender who loses an edge and needs to go to the bench for a quick repair (both of these scenarios during the stoppage of an icing). It's either incredible luck or an incredible coincidence....or, gamesmanship :)

Understood.....but, you will never convince an NHL coach to not pull the goalie when trailing by 1 or 2

Game 7 tonight. Crosby always shows up for game 7's (and other big games).

    I'm taking the Pens tonight....2-1

Great game! Easily could have gone the other way.

Senators had a lot more for Pittsburgh than they were given credit for.

That game was really exciting. You could see some exhaustion setting in. It's a pity someone had to lose.

Congrats on the win for your team! It was truly a hell of a game. I watched both overtimes in the airport lounge and I was at the edge of my seat. Saw some of the regular time highlights and some big saves! It was an emotional one for me seeing it end on such a weak/odd goal but that is how these things go.

Kudos to Ottawa as I did not think they could beat Boston to begin with. I thought they had a chance again New York. Did not expect game 7 against Pitts. Anderson was at another level.

Can't wait for the finals...Nashville is my guess!

    Thanks

Anderson's reaction after Kunitz's ot goal was something else; I actually felt bad for him.

    Game 1 tonight....hoping for a good series.

Tough to predict who is going to win...I thought Nasville a while back, especially when they swept Chicago...but my gut tells me Pitt in 6 games.

Yes, I saw that, that was the defenseman's fault (#44).

If you look at the replay, he did a lame effort of trying to block the shot and instead screened his own goalie.

Cardinal rule for defensemen: either block the shot or get the hell out of the way.

    Strange game.

Pens go thirty-eight minutes without a shot, cough up a three goal lead, and still manage to win.

Nice to see Sheary finally get a goal this post season.

You got that right...strangest game I have ever seen.

Their first shot in the third period, which ended up being a goal, wasn't until 3:17 left. I don't think I've ever seen nor heard of a team going an entire period without a shot on net, not to mention 38 consecutive minutes without one.

When it was 3-0, I (and everyone else) thought it was over. Then Nashville storms back with 3 goals...then the kick-in-the-groin goal by Pitt all but ended it.

On a side note, regarding the Nash goal that was called back, I am not sure what camera angle they had that was conclusive enough to overturn the call on the ice. It was impossible to tell whether or not his skate was still on the ice. It was one of those situations where the call on the ice has to stand due to there not being any conclusive evidence to overturn the call.

What a stupid call...thats the Crosby affect for you. I saw it but did not think it was 100% clear to overturn.

Strange game for sure...ding the top bar and back for the Penguins game winner.

Although a Pens fan, I think that call was a travesty. I'm assuming there must have been a camera angle available to Toronto that we didn't see?

Agree completely. I can't stand replay challenges in hockey or the NFL.

The issue I have with replay is that some plays are challengeable and some are not.

If you can challenge one play, then you need to be able to challenge EVERY play.

People argue "replay gets the wrong call right", but what about the incorrect calls that are not reviewable? How do you get those wrong calls right? How is that fair? You either review EVERYTHING or NOTHING. Period.

The NFL was so much better in the pre-replay days, and so was the NHL. The NHL is doing nothing more than trying to copy the NFL (equip referees with microphones, replay).

Referees are not going to get every call right, but in the end the calls will even out.

The Preds need to be concerned where in a game you massively outplay a team, hold them to zero shots in 38 consecutive minutes, yet still lose.

If you can't win that game, then what's going to happen when the Pens play a complete game? Actually with that said the Pens don't need to play better than they did Monday cause they won regardless.

Thanks for your candor. It's refreshing to see that even a Pens fan thinks that call was BS.

That would be the only acceptable explanation, but if they did in fact have the right angle for the call, why wouldn't they show the public to avoid being attacked and accused of favouring Pitt to win?
