Lewis' podium comments about "booing" shows he has a really thin skin!

    10 seconds.

If you are losing a few seconds a lap and there are enough laps to go...the penalty is worth it...so its not really a stiff penalty.

Why did they wait until long after the race to announce? Nico still would have been on the podium in third rather than second.

Just grateful that Max turned up for work.

If only that Renault engine was a match for the Mercs !!!

Yah I'm with you on that. I don't think the FIA thought this through at all (duh!)

What they should have is a standard time penalty for each offense that can be awarded as soon as its found. Then its just math and can be added at the end of the race.

IMO, they don't want to do that because they want to stay in the background.

That joke's wearing thin already though! - We're back to the 80's/early 90's Ferrari performances! :(

The penalty was a tad complicated (From: Rosberg penalised for radio rules breach - Formula 1 - Eurosport Australia ) :

A statement from the stewards, led by 1992 F1 world champion Nigel Mansell, said: "Having considered the matter extensively, the stewards determined the team gave some instructions to the driver that were specifically permitted under technical directive 014-16.

"However, the stewards determined the team then went further and gave instructions to the driver that were not permitted under the technical directive, and were in breach of article 27.1 of the sporting regulations, that the driver must drive the car alone and unaided."

So they had to determine if the rules had been adhered to or not, and in the end it was decided that the transmission confirming to Rosberg that he needed to skip past 7th gear in order to drive the car did breach the rules.

With what's at stake, they needed to be sure of the rules they were applying.

Ferrari going backwards. SF number one driver is Kimi (look at the points) and they just signed him to another contract for next year.

"Kimi is the last Ferrari world driving champion and he assures us hewants to win."

Of course, this does not make him the best driver available now does it.

I think there's only so much the drivers can do with the equipment they are given TBH.

The car's difficult to set up (and Kimi isn't as flexible as Seb when it comes to a car that's not perfect), it's too sensitive to changes in wind direction, it struggles to perform behind other cars (believe it or not, the Mercedes has a similar issue!), and the window in which it works it's tyres best is far too narrow (probably the worst on the grid!).

The problem is, those four issues are not easy to counteract.

My turn what? Do you believe that Mercedes was deliberately trying to sabotage Rosberg's race? Please clarify what you want a response to! I think it's a poorly-thought-out conspiracy theory to suggest that Mercedes deliberately screwed Rosberg with a compromised radio message, as was suggested in the post to which I was responding.

I don't like the radio restrictions, and I think they need greater consistency and clarity. Not sure the reference to T9 in Austria is, but wasn't Hamilton compromised with bad engine settings in Baku and the team told him exactly what they were allowed to - nothing. They actually said something along the lines of "We can't say anything about that" regarding his incorrect power unit settings. No conspiracy, no deliberate unfair messages to one driver over the other.

I think the teams are still feeling out the radio restrictions. In Baku, they didn't help Lewis, nor did they help Nico. This race, they were quick to respond to Nico's gearbox problem, almost too fast with a “Driver default 1-0-1, chassis default 0-1, chassis default 0-1” message. The avoid 7th gear comment and telling Nico he has to shift through it was probably an "automatic" response by an engineer trying to help his driver with the car. He probably got caught up in the heat of the moment as I said before, their response to the gearbox problem was really fast. I'm guessing they saw it and had a solution at the same time Nico radioed in.

Baku settings where not destroying the car, it just made it not as fast as it should be.

Silverstone Rosberg setting caused the gearbox to fail (somehow), at least for 7th gear.

FIA regs stipulate that if something is about to fail or has failed, only then can the team give advice on a new setting, as long as that means that setting won't make the car go faster than previous setting (when this is taken is absolutely beyond me and as per usual with F1, open for interpretation).

Mercedes gave him advice on which setting to use to fix the car, which is legal (as far as I can understand it). After that, they advised him to avoid using 7th gear, and THAT is illegal.

But surely that means that in Austria, when lewis was told to avoid kerbs in T9, was illegal too? Because that's driving advice, which is forbidden in any case!

FIA is once again completely and utterly inconsistent. I don't trust Wolff a single bit. Did you see his reaction when Rosberg overtook Verstappen? Looked like he was fuming! Wolff is firmly behind Lewis, as was obvious for the last few years.

I'm not saying they mentioned the radio thing with intention to get him a penalty, but it's not beyond him. Stranger things have happened. Briatore told his #2 driver to crash to give Alonso a win.

Because if the pits had not given NR the instructions there would have been no infraction. The pits violated the rule, not the driver.

Im going to give it 10 years minimum before someone beats merc to the title. Ferrari cant even make their gearboxes last a race.

Where was Seb today? Cant improve from like 10th? Pathetic performance

Okay. It wasn't clear that the times posted at the end included the penalty.

Hard to tell, on CNBC. On the rare times when the world feed remembered to point the cameras away from the pits and look at cars, NBC went to commercials.

Only saw the race in a series of replays.

The driver is becoming less and less important in F1.

Can we please get rid of radio communications.all this 'box boxxx boxxxx' rubbish, just hang out the freaking pit board.

If the car develops a problem, either drive around it ,slow down, pit or retire etc.Tough.

Raining, let the driver decide which tyres to put on,when to come in etc.

Safety car start? This was a real joke,i understand they have to decide what to do about 9 minutes before the start.Just let the guys start on wets, then if a few spin off,so what? Slow down!Drive the car on its limit.

There is a bloody big sign outside most racing tracks saying 'Motor Racing Is Dangerous' or something similar...if this carries on just change the last word to 'Boring'

I disagree - I'd agree heartily if it were spec racing with simple mechanical driver inputs of throttle, brake, and steering, but those days are left behind.

Yes those days are left behind, now we have ERS,KERS,DRS etc etc no problem with that..but are we really any better off.The driver is getting left behind to the point that its getting just a bit too complicated for them to work out, they are gradually being phased out of he equation.

Driverless cars? that should be safe enough!

Serious question . . . do you really think Lewis is a legend, or are you just having fun on this thread?

Nico could not stop the team from coming on his radio, so I agree with you, Karl.

Please god, no. Don't even say it.
