Just got home from work to watch the last minute of Q3.....................damn it!

 

I'm lending them the challenge, at least it would have got out on the track .. and sounded a lot better than that hairdryer crap !!

I may well run out of years before we win a Championship again, nothing else to say, but roll on 2018...

Did Vettel end up getting in trouble for getting a lift back to the pits?

 

It appears not, part of the special treatment that Ferrari gets from the FIA.

Autosport are saying that Vettel's gearbox was undamaged and he won't have to take a grid penalty. It was flown to the factory, where miraculously it was found to be in perfect condition. A heavily shunted gearbox was carried behind closed doors at the Ferrari factory and the exact same set of components emerged later in perfect condition. How about that?

F1 gearbox casings are carbon fibre, which is very strong in the direction of design load but very brittle in any other direction. You remove a driveshaft by carefully extracting it through an oil seal that is held in place by a bolted-in circular retainer. To think that the driveshaft could be torn out and end up at 180 degrees to the casing without damaging it is literally incredible.

Unless of course, in the arcane world of F1 regulations, you're not allowed to change the gearbox internals but are allowed to change the casing.
