Evans Head is half way up Australia's east coast and has a long history of use as an airfield and during WW2 was a major training facility and still an active area for exercises today.

Every year early January there is a Fly-in with cars and motorbike displays as well.. being in peak summer season and right by the beach is a perfect location although this year started with heavy rain which thankfully cleared during day 1 of 2..

I was a volunteer to help setup, run and pack up and first time at the event!

Here are some selected pics.. hope you find it interesting and sharing for all to have a look at some activity down under!

Cool. #5 in the first set is a favorite.

Looks like a neat airfield. Any overhead pics?

..if you'll allow me an indulgence here's a pic in a Centurion helmet I took along to add a bit of colour to the event.. seems my hopes for a laid back crowd were correct and it was well received by all and sundry!

Cheers and thanks! .. I didn't get up in the air as doing jobs on the ground.. but will aim to next year if here again!

Some of the tarmac around the apron and such looks a bit down at heel with broken up patches and grass growing through.. but it's under heritage preservation order and adds a bit of character to the place.. here's a satellite view.

What is the airplane in the 5th photo? It looks rather like a Storch, but the wing and windshield look quite different.

Some nice unique-to-Australia types here; I love the Wirraway. And that's a lovely Grumman Mallard.

That's what I was thinking it was, but agree there appear to be some differences.

He calls it a Storch, I'm sorry I don't know any more to help.

He runs this bush flyers group on FB if you're on there and likely you'd find more info plus other interesting stuff too.. https://www.facebook.com/groups/bushflyersdownunder/

LOVE the Mallard.. love all the Grumman seaplanes really.. Saw an Albatross at Oshkosh 2015 and now this is my 2nd real life close encounter ;)

Again if you're on FB you can see my 360/pano of the Mallard cockpit you can pan around and view various angles.. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10211609800580887&set=a.10201470474384069.1073741845.1242073698&type=3&theater
