He's our best chance for another WDC - Alonso's talent with Kimi's demeanour. And didn't Bearman do well, nobody missed Magnussen at all.
Totally agree! Fingers crossed BIG things to come for Oscar! And Bearman did very well. We might have OP and OB fighting it out for a WDC one day in the future.
Sad news about DR but unfortunately he's an old man at 35 in a young man's sport. Liam will be faster, because his reflexes are quicker. Getting old is a punish, but there's a very long list of F1 drivers who didn't survive to see 35.
.....and then you have the Alonso's,Fangio's and Black Jack.....still winning,or at least point scoring, at over 40.
Which is what makes them the outlyers/true champions, whatever you want to call them... One of the best days of my life was seeing Fangio drive the MB at the 1st Adelaide GP!
I think I've said here before that Alonso has a special talent. The cars that Fangio and Brabham drove had nothing like the corner speed that arose from the discovery of ground effect. Driving a downforce car on the limit is a different art that requires consistent fast reflex performance. btw I think Moss was the master of the 4 wheel drift era.
What they both had was the best technology of their respective day so it still means they were both ahead of their respective packs, they were only a couple of examples quickly thought of mind you in my example.
My dream was always to see an Italian drive a Ferrari to victory at Monza - but Alonso gave me 2 out of 3 and it was a spectacular day! Definitely one of the greats.
Fangio was the master of the 4-wheel drift be it the W196 or the 250F or the D50 in 1956. Moss was the more "technical " of the period ..
From the post-war war period WDC 1951 to the end of 1957 Fangio had the best available equipment be it the Alfa 159,250F the D50 or the W196. Brabham as great a driver as he was in 1959/60 had the best car modern rear vs old front engine. Brabham, one could also say the same about 1966 -the year of transition from 1.5 litre to 3.0 litre that equipment won him the WDC Moss is unlucky, the superior driver but so often second to Fangio in the team Mercedes-Benz /Maserati followed by years of loyalty racing for Ron Walker, 4 times runner-up in the WDC and 3 times 3rd in points. By the age of 32, his career was over after the Goodwood crash, Moss often said he would have raced F1 into his late 30s and who with? Lotus/BRM/Ferrari ?
The discussion initiated by Ian's comment re 35 YO+ F1 drivers and extended by my comments was what it is about, not what Moss did or did not achieve by the young age that he had to pull the pin. If you have some other examples of over 35+ YO F1 successful drivers then that is what is relevant..
I included Moss in the context as YOU mentioned how the other two were a lot further ahead of others of their respective period -which is INCORRECT. Which other 35-year-old plus F1 drivers shall I include there are SEVERAL.
I added Moss to this comment . Which other F1 drivers over 35 shall I add there are several including WC winners .
