I've always had a thing for the Euro 208s. I love the idea of the tiny tiny V8 (don't ask me why, because I'm not sure why) with the turbo. What I'm wondering is how much can the stock turbo be taxed, and how easy it is to beef up the turbo system on these cars?

I'm not sure if they were intercooled from the factory, but if not, adding would could really pep up the car. Also, adding a modern turbo without the early 80's lag could add some nice SOTP feel. Increasing the pressure could add a bit, as well.

Seems like a 208 could be modified to put out close to 300 rwhp without sacrificing engine longivity. While I know much higher numbers can be attained, seems like with minimal expenses and reliability, this could be a real performer. Anyone here have any experience with modding 208s?

The later versions (I think they called them just GTS/B) were intercooled, the 208s where not to the best of my knowledge. My 308 engine hits 22 psi without any problems, so I'd guess that would be ok on a 208 too.

At the FCA National Meet in Colorado back in 00 a guy had a 208 that was REALLY modified. I had never seen a 208 in the flesh before. The owner walked up as I was taking pictures of it and spend about a half hour telling me everything he had done to it. I cannot remember his name but I do have pictures of the engine, etc. I'll post them when I find them.

Apart from pistons and cylinders, 208 engine was almost the same than 308. Just add a little Turbo (as Ferrari did after a while to increase hp) and I think you can easily reach 300 bhp.
As far as reliability is concerned, agin the al engine was structured to handle them, so I do not guess that there are is any major concern.

You are fully correct, sir! :) They were manufactured initially as GT4 for the Italian market in order to take advantage of the lower VAT(18% vs 36%) for cars with a displacement lover than 2000 cc.
Due to the very low power output the GTB / GTS version was upgraded with a turbo (no intecooler). When 328 was released, on the little sister with 2000 cc engine an intercooler was installed in order to improve performances.

    ok

here is what I would like too do with a 208

    1) get a 308 short block use the right pistons too drop the compression to 8.5 do a full and proper rebuild get the crank lighted and rebalanced.

Cryogenicly have the crank treated forged pistons .80 over on the bore
have the head fully worked over by a pro nice set of cams.

    2) Fuel injection. only so much power a CIS set up can handel go with an after market programable set up, dont want too use a ITB set up b/c will cost too much just a larger singel thrttole body set up + water injection/methanol Extrude hone the intake manifold.

    3) Turbo T3/T4 Turbonecits turbo Ball baring - metal baldes .

    4) Extrude hone the stock 208 exmani fold with a Jet hot coating.

    5) Ignition go with an after market DFI one and something that is progrramable.

    6) Fuel delivery. larger fule line from the tank too the injector rail. bosch Dule external fule pumps.

ok so figure a 3040cc V8 built motor I would say at least 400hp but with some dyno tuning and calibrating that # will definitely go up from there.

now for the transmission I would send it out for a cryogen treatment and shotpeend and a brand new quafe LSD.

one of the problmes I see would be a good radiator and oil cooling.
