I saw a recent thread where someone had pictured their blank instead of a radio. I know my radio is too flashy for my car but it was there when I got it and I have not yet replaced it. I have looked in a few places (Best Buy, Crutchfield, etc.) but in my opinion nothing I have seen looks appropriate for the car. So I would like to see pictures of various radios installed in 308s. It would also be nice if you could state the brand/model if known. I will start things off with a picture of my current radio although it would require a video for you to see the annoying display of lights that is the true cause of my dislike of this radio. This is an Alpine CDA-7965.

Here is Alpine CDA 9847 in my 1989 328. Its pretty simple the four white buttons are a bit bluish when its on. All other buttons are black or grey with blue/white back lighting that can only be seen at night. It does not have all of the multi color lighting of your Alpine 7965. The original Alpine from when the car was new had 6 large preset buttons that glowed green. I wanted something with a removeable face plate and better CD player (I saved the original head unit, Alpine 7904, but its a very early single CD player that skipped if you hit the slightest bump in the road. When it was new it was $700). Alpine CDA 9847 has been out of production since 2005/2006, I got it as a clearance item for $120 and its far better than the original unit!

Dino944 I think your Alpine looks fine in your 328. I think the cockpit of a 328 looks more contemporary and therefore the radio you selected seems appropriate. The interior of a 308 is somewhat less modern looking (specifically the controls on the center console) and consequently I feel that a less modern looking radio is required for a 308.

Hi Geometry, you are probably right, I did not consider all of the toggle switches etc in the 308. It was a struggle for me to find something as plain as the one I bought. It seems most head units available today at electronic stores look like juke boxes. Your best bet may be to search of something period correct on craigslist or ebay. Hope the search goes well.

    Best regards,
    Dino

Here's mine. it's the original dealer installed radio from new. I don't know the model. Not seen another I think. When I bought the car it was in a bag in the trunk (a previous owner had replaced it with some modern thing with plenty of blinking switches lights and knobs.

This Blaupunkt radio was in my 1978 308GTS in 1985 (still works) and I believe it is the original dealer installed radio with the original (still works) manual power antenna. Sound quality is not that great, but I only turned it on once to see if it worked; haven't used it since. The car makes much better sounds.

    Not a great shot, but here's mine....and I don't like it.
It's to complicated to use when driving. Give me knobs and 5 buttons anytime!

Here's mine... It's a JVC Kameleon unit, model KD-LX3J. The face is completely blank when off which really maintains a clean looking dash IMHO. When turned on a small row of buttons fold out on the bottom and the display illuminates. The face slides down for CDs as well.

GeoMetry - I have a nearly identical Alpine unit in another vehicle and I've always been a fan of the Alpine head units; those that are designed for the iPod like the iDA-X001 look good and are worth checking out. JVC still makes a Kameleon model if that is the look you're after - mine's long out of production, but the KD-AVX44 is their current model.

My 308's radio is one that looks like other guys' here that are dealer installed. Its a Clarion, cassette/ radio. Two big knobs on each side. Sounds like crap and I never use it anyways, ha. I suggest looking at ebay for a used piece. One thing that I like about the radio is that it fits the "look" of my car, even though I never use it .... good luck.

Nice. I've not seen one of those on a 308. Is that from a 512BB?

I really liked this radio it has a matte black finish, two knobs, six preset buttons and I thought the design was nicely understated. All business no flashiness. Unfortunately I could not get it to fit in my car. The search continues...

The chassis fit perfectly but the faceplate snaps on around the chassis and that made it too large to fit the opening in the dashboard. It is an OEM Honda radio from a 2005 Civic.

Very nice idea. It looks like the old vintage Beckers that you find in many 365GTB/4 Daytonas and 246 Dinos.

I think the Mexico would look too "old" for a 308. From what I understand they are very expensive (approx $2500 us) and not compatible w/ US radio frequencies. With that being said I know that Blaupunkt has several offerings that are very plain looking. Not exactly period correct, but also not glaringly wrong at the same time

Yes, I agree, would look a little out of place I thought. It's not digital radio either. Seems like a lot of money for the old radio standard.

There is also this one that comes with a variety of knobs and the listing implies that there is a selection of face plates. I wish it was available in matte black, I don't really like the chrome.

I think that McIntosh would look just about perfect. Unfortunately cost is a concern. Thanks for posting that, I would never have guessed McIntosh made a car radio.

The Retrosound One is available in black. They sell several chrome face plates for older cars. This unit is one of a kind if you are unwilling to cut your dash. This will allow you to hook up the Ipod which as all I really need.

I have been a long...long time owner of McIntosh, I currently own 6 pieces. I had never thought of a Mac car radio for the Ferrari. Looking at the specs it looks like it is not an integrated unit and will require a separate power amp.

Have you seen one, and is there a chance it will fit in a 308?
