Has anybody here been to the 24 Hours of Lemans? I have it in the back of my mind to possibly make THE pilgrimmage next year (depending on $, time, work, etc). What were your experiences? Where did you stay? When do you suggest going - a few days early? - a week? - other? What non-race/race related events should one take in while there?

I'm also going to post this in the Racing Section.

    Thanks guys!

I have never been to Le Mans either but quite a few of my fellow Aston Martin Owners Club members have. Most of them seem to take the camping route and quite a few will be heading to Le Mans this year to watch the return of Aston Maritn with their DBR9.

I drove in the race three or four times, but that was back when the Mulsanne straight was flat out and straight. The event is stretched over most of a week with tech inspection and qualifying, but unless you are really into cars that’s a bit too much. Bring earplugs. Lots of them. Oh! And rain gear. It can turn nasty during a French summer.

Been there in 2000 and 2002. Currently working my tail off to be there as a driver in the next few years as it is one of my lifelong abitions to support the maple leaf over there.

As for the event, the whole week is way too much except for only the most die hard of fans. Both times I went, I arrived about 30 mins from start time and left just after the race. 24 straight hours is plenty as you can walk the grounds and catch tons of the race. The strength of the event is in the atmosphere and the cars there are like nothing you have ever seen. In 2000 I caught some sleep in a Honda I shared with a friend (we drove down from England). That morning I woke up only to see 2 guys wake up in their F40 having spent part of the night getting some sleep.

Tickets are cheap and never sell out. Parking for the 24 Hours is less than $20 and there is tons of food both on and off the grounds. Make sure you have a hotel the day before and after but on race day do it right and sleep in the car for a few hours if you must. LeMans is by far the least expensive perfesional race I have ever attended. Also it is the one with the most character.
