Fabulous pair! Every time i worry about my Dino being painted black i just look at your car to rest my case.... it is beautiful....Do you struggle to decide which one to drive yet? although i guess the novelty of the 355 hasnt worn off yet. G P
I want to drive the Dino 24/7. More fun than anything else in the world. Just makes me smile. The 355 is an awesome piece of machinery and a blast to drive, but it's just not in the same category of amusement park ride as the Dino, even though it is MUCH faster, more neutral in corners, and just more modern in every way. Here's the kicker: I replaced the stereo head in the 355 yesterday, and the previous owner's $6,000 amp and speaker system is completly insane. I will actually use it. In the Dino, the only possible way I'd use the stereo is to listen for a weather report!! The 355 is my second favorite ride, but if I could only have one... no contest. As to black -- please understand what you are getting in to. Black shows every nick, chip, ding, rub, swirl, dust mite, and so on. If I could snap my fingers and have the car repainted in a second, I would look for a metallic black or deeeeep charcoal... the metallic paints just hide all the crap. That way you get the rich beauty of a black, and much less hassle.I don't know if Ferrari ever made such a color, but it's a new world, innit??
It has always been apparant, that being the lineage eminating from the Dino series. The evolution of the body styles from the 246 to the 308 to the 328, etc. The F-355 obviously is a direct decendent. The beautiful, flowing lines, the genetics, are obvious to see. Your images beautifully point this heritage up. Enjoy both of thes movable works of art!! To me, the Dino has always been the most beautiful automobole ever produced. I hope you enjoy yours even half as much as I do mine. Marc
The Dino is Nero (Black) and the 355 is Swatters Blue, which can look from dark navy (as in this light) to almost a light purplish Nart, depending in the light!
That's a pair I have often planned, although I'd probably get a GTS or coupe. Your cars are lovely! The 355 is beautiful, but I'll say the high point, the absolute pinnacle of design is the Dino. Never before or since had that "perfect-ness" been achieved.
I just can't see the point of a high-performance car that's not just for the track without the ability to pop at least part of the top. The sound, the sun, the sky... No argument on the Dino's aesthetics. It has everything, from the sensuous curves of a Bugatti to the menacing wedge of an Enzo incorporated into a taut and elegant sculpture. It is the summation of everything perfect in auto design. Nothing better before or since.
wow wow wow. I am floored. I saw a photo of a nero (black) Dino in another thread and had to find more pictures, stumbling on this one. say what you will about the difficulty of keeping a black car spotless and swirl-free... a nero Dino is ab-so-lute-ly beautiful. I think it is the perfect color for a Dino... your eyes just wander and follow the lovely reflections on all those graceful curves. the only (very minor) thing that isn't quite to my taste is the chrome lip that bridges the two bumpers... but hey it's your car not mine, to each his own. and I would love to own a nero Dino... every long hour it took to polish her would be filled with the joy of enjoying those gleaming metallic curves. magnificent.
You know, a year later, I came back and looked at these pictures, and the 355, well it just kinda disappears next to the Dino. I mean, really, who cares?? The Dino is just gorgeous, and there's no way to pull the eye off of it to look at the plebian (only by comparison) lines of the 355. And I love my 355! Dino supreme.
I have noticed something strange in my 33 years of Dino ownership. When a Dino was photographed next to a 308, in the '70s, there was a jarring dissonance between the two shapes, the Dino being much rounder, and the 308 flatter, though they had very similar dimensions. In later years, a Dino looked better next to a 348 or 355, which may have been a bit larger than the Dino. Now, the Dino looks wonderful, in complete harmony, next to a 360 or 430, though these later models appear huge next to the Dino, with their safety bumpers, crumple zones, etc. In the end, however, the Dino shape still outshines them all, in my opinion. I love Ferraris and am lucky to own a few, but my heart belongs to my Dino. If I ever had to sell my cars (revolution, bankrupcy, legislation, illness, old age....) the last one to go would be my Dino. Often on wekends I pull my Dino out of the garage, drive it onto the grass, sit down about 20 feet away, light a cigar, and just stare... Sometimes I nap for a few minutes, and then stare again... Reminds me of the way I used to look at my first "serious" girlfriend when she would take her clothes off (a stunning US woman, BTW...) Am I senile or what?
Both lovely cars but I have to say that the 246 is a fantastic looking car and realy makes the 355 look plain. How great was the styling back in those days.
The good thing about the Dino is the lack of compromise in its design. When new US bumper regs. came into effect, Ferrari could have slapped some ugly appendages on the Dino. Instead, they wisely opted to let the design go into retirement, with dignity. If you don't care for the bumpers on early 308 GT/4 models, you can imagine what a "safety-bumper" 246 would have looked like! Fred
Every couple of months, I'll go out to the garage for something, and the Dino just looks up at me, and breaks my heart. I pull up a lounge chair, put on some music, and get a drink, and just stare at it. That's not senility. It's art appreciation.
Given how low the nose is, I don't think that there would have been any way to meet the bumper standard, short of a 308-type redesign of the entire front of the car, which of course would have been unacceptable (and unnecessary).
I'm afraid to ask this question.. but you don't do anything.. innapropriate with that car do you? The way you are talking about it.. I am starting to get a feeling that you have a huge vat of vaseline and violin music with a private garage somewhere..
Great pics .. great looking cars. The antenna on the Dino must be the longest one I've ever seen .. I think my Dino one was half that length.
