Can somebody advise me if its normal to have 2 or 3 mm of play when holding both output shafts of the Diff and moving them together in the same direction ??

I wonder why nobody responds to this question

I always have a clonk ... On starting and wonder if it's because of the diff ..???

I can not find any information in the workshop manual regarding the acceptable axial movement of the planetary gear shaft. However 2 - 3 mm appears to be excessive if you ask me. My 308 has less than 1 mm movement and my new 246 diff has zero. Noise from the differential will normally indicate if you have any excessive wear in this complex component. Clonks during start up could also be wear in the LOBRO semi axels. May I recommend that you buy a copy of the workshop manual. There are drawings and descriptions and it's a great help in fault finding on these old cars. I hope this was a help for you, otherwise someone else with more expertise might chime in and assist with further details.

    Regards

I had mine to pieces a couple of years ago. the output shafts tighten up when the diff is under load from the engine. until then they flop around a bit and there is no way to get rid of the play (that I could find) so I wouldn't worry too much. mine also has an occasional click from the back end when pulling away, I have checked everything and can only conclude it is the diff tightening up on its internal ramps. its a very odd design. if someone knows better please let me know
