I note my distributor has four little weights ..but only two seem to have springs under them and the other two seem to be without a spring...just free play

ie one one side ,one of the weights is sprung whilst the one next to it is free play

    On the other side.same situation...

is this normal and if not where can I get these springs ??

    Thanks

The weight is shown left in Peters picture, to the right are the two pins with a shim and spring each. You should have the parts in Peters picture 2x, each weight has two pins/shims/springs. Ususally there are also very thin washers between the pin and the shims added when setting up the distributor curve.

If one of the pin/shims is missing a spring then someone messed with the advance mechanism. My recommendation would be to have a competent workshop with a distributor tester checking out the advance curve and recurve the distributor if required (very likely if parts are missing).

P.s. it's very important not to mix up the pins/springs/washers/weights when you disassemble the advance mechanism as this will change the advance curve.

Ok, please be aware that an advance rebuild kit is never plug&play, you need to have access to a distributor testing machine to do the recurving, and usually also additional springs and washers.
