I have a early 246 (#00818). My three questions are: 1. Did the car ever come with a radio? I don't see an area where the original radio came with the car. 2. What type of tires? The manual says 185 / 14. I have the original knock-off wheels. Does Coker have available a 185/14 Michelin? Is there another 185/14 tire that I can use and still have the car look original?? 3. Where do the original stickers go...exhaust, engine, shocks, radiator, etc?
Thanks for your help! (I'd post some photos of the but I'm not really computer savy and don't know how to upload the photos).

    Hi.

Radio was an option - Voxson or Becker. It fits in the dash but requires some trimming - I'll send a picture of it's location tomorrow. There are a combination of stickers and stencils all over the car on things like air box cover, exhaust tips, fuse box covers, fuel pumps, fuel filter, coil, etc. Plan a trip to Seattle and you can see two "L" series cars in a day and snap photos. One is restored and one is incredibly original. I actually made up stickers for the coil and fuse box covers and now Kilamanjaro sells them for other "L" series owners.

    Cheers...Keith

    Keith -

You're up at 12:33AM and checking up on FCHAT? What is your excuse? Mine is that I'm trying to finish a brief before fireworks later today.

    Factory Option?

My understanding was that late 60's Ferraris did not come with a factory installed radio. So, an early series Dino could have had any radio that was commercially available in Europe at the time that a dealer or aftermarket installer was willing to put in. Don't know what all those were, but I would think there must have been more options than Voxson and Becker.

I have a Becker in my Dino, and they look great. Sound and reception are typical early 70's, so don't expect a miracle there.

I also onw an early Dino (00512) which I believe had only two owners before me, so should be pretty original as well. I have used quite a few of the Kilimandjaro stickers although not 100% of all the ones I should have and where they should go. My car came with a Becker radio, which I shoul be able to photograph next week. In the meantime, I would love to see some of Keith's pictures as I understand his car is in very good and original condition!

this is not a rule, but rather a rule of thumb:

all us spec dino's that were delivered in the us had radio's installed at the us dealer as an option, if installed. almost all cars came with speakers and antenna in place.

all us spec dino's that were taken delivery of in europe had the option (most likely installed) of a radio. for the most part, most of these cars had the radio already in place.

euro cars had the the option from the get go.

if any car was not optioned with a radio, it had a blank out plate, with the exception of the early car that had no plate or cut-out.

for the most part, the radio's were autovox, becker, or bauplunked. there may have been others. although becker is the most desired, it doesn't mean it was the most common.

My car didn't have any cut out for a radio and the dash & mousehair seem to be the original. The car was originally delivered in Italy. I'd be interested to see the photos of the stickers.... thanks! It doesn't look like there was ever an antenna for the radio. Any words of wisdom regarding the tires?

wspeer - Does your rule of thumb apply to pre 1972 Dinos, as there was no U.S. spec or Euro specification cars? There was only the Dino. Not until 02832 or thereabouts, did the factory prepare a car for DOT requirements. (02832 - my car, what we now refer to as a Euro, but then merely a Dino, sold new in the U.S. I purchased this car in 1978),

    My 1973 USA 246GTS Dino fits in with this synopsis;
The Chinetti invoice lists an antenna but no radio and the car has a mousehair covered blank off plate which appears original.
    Great research, keep it coming!

    Did you find your briefs?

the deletion of the radio was, as i best as i understand, an american market way of keeping the costs down. i woul have to believe that euro cars always had the option. keep in mind that early cars didn't even have a pre-cut hole. i have never heard specifics of a radio being a factory options, but i have to believe that the factory wouldn't miss a chance to make some extra money.
