Since no one had anything to say, I'll stick my neck out and say the car that sold at RM for $99K incl. buyer's premium was a 60,000 km "nice driver."

    Any comments?

Looks to be a nice, clean driver Euro car. Can't tell from the description if it had tools and books, and there's no real discussion of mechanical condition, plus no shots of the interior.

Jim, did you get a look at the car?

    http://www.rmauctions.com/AuctionResults.cfm?SaleCode=MO06#

car is about 2/3 of the way down the page of results.

But if this is a +- $100K car, then we may need to recalibrate our car values for our insurance companies.

    shawn.

I don't think so. It just flew under the radar. This was the first I saw of it, and I try to keep track of this stuff.

It's also not really ground breaking is it? Just in line with the crazyness going on in DinoLand right now.

$100k for a good coupe is about right, however, it makes gregg blue's red coupe at $80k look like a steal. if $100k is the number, you have to ask about the unsold $80k coupe.

i figure the auction car didn't have any of the goodies and is a good driver. did anyone see this car in person?

    paint?
    rust?
    fit and finish?
    interior?

I shot some video of it, which reveals:

Yellow wheel chock, greenish container with presumably safety triangle inside, a jack and apparently some tools rolled up in plastic rolls. I don't know enough to know if they were correct. No books seen.

Rear trunk cover covered in thick felt or flocking of some kind.

Engine bay clean and done to amateur restoration standards--orange peel in black paint on cam covers.

Much flat black overspray on front grill opening trim, also some on fuse/relay board in front trunk area.

Foam seal above radiator crumbling, rotten, half gone.

Dash covered in incorrect material--more like fuzzy black polyester carpeting than mouse hide. I don't know if that's the stuff everyone is using lately for lack of the correct material.

Odometer reads 60,000km, steering wheel rim leather gouged, cracked, looks bad.

Vinyl interior with manual windows. Driver's door panel vinyl sagging, seats need to be restuffed or redone, as vinyl is compressed and/or stretched. Driver's seat rear cover loose and lying on floor behind it.

Piece of white plastic crudely cut and lying over flat surface between rear of quarter window and rear window. Someone forgot to cover it with vinyl before reinstalling?

Metal Ferrari name trim on left side of rear body panel.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST-- The rear trunk lid looks like it would if someone sat on it and bounced up and down, pushing it down an inch or so just to the rear of the middle. Very obvious damage.

The estimate was $100-125K, and I told my friend there was no way it would sell for that.

Personally I'm considering upping my insurance coverage on my car.

    Not crazy, reality.
These cars drive amazingly well and on this weekend's three day trip through the mountains to Canada over the 5000ft North Cascades pass I had many Club members come up to me and say such things as:
"That little car sure keeps up with the rest" (575Maranello owner)
"I couldn't even come close to passing you" (512TR owner)
"I like the styling of your car better than all the other Ferraris (Numerous local towns' people)
    and the kicker
"You've got a V-12, right?" (a VERY serious question by an F355 owner who could not catch up to me)

Mike Adams, the Designer of the Lotus Elise has owned a Dino for over a decade. Is there any wonder that the Dino's timeless design, the weelbase, track, weight/balance come through on the Lotus?

Pininfarina claimed it was one of their 10 best designs of all time.
    Need I go on?

Since many of us have less than ideal/clean F-car puchase experiences (even with a supposedly sterling PPI such as I had with my Dino), I would love to hear at least an abridged edition of your tale; names need not (and probably should not) be mentioned.

    Maybe $125K isn't so crazy.

Car new in 1972 cost approx $15,000.

Adjusted for inflation in 2005 dollars that's about $68,000.

So, the going price is only twice the inflation adjusted price.

I'll do some other cars later and see where the Dino stands in comparison.

I don't want to derail this thread, but it's interesting to use your same formula (x 4.53) for a gallon of gas. $3.00 / 4.53 = $0.66 per gallon. I think that's not too far from what I was paying back then! That's why I get nauseous every time I hear people complaining about the cost of gas.

Gas in the was $.399 when I started buying it in '71. I remember becuase we could get 10 gallons for $4.00.

Weird the stuff that sticks in your head.

    so...

    1971 - 2005

    $.40 = $1.90

hmmm........ maybe inflation has caught up with fuel, too. That $1.90 is about what gas cost before the recent run up, right?

I'll try to dig them out when I get home. I had my dino there as well and didn't enter it in the concours, cuz I didn't like the idea of strangers slamming my doors, bootlid etc. Funny thing was after the judging was completed, one of the judges came up to me and said I probably would have won if I entered my car. Guess that means mine is worth at least what the Cummins car sells for :D

Well as always, the trick is knowing the right time to sell. Might be worth hanging onto your boxer for another 18mths. I hope I can hang on the dino for the long term and give it to my kids one day
