Hi Guys: My 246GT "M" series was missing the rear light cover (this is the big thin plastic part that goes in the luggage compartment and hides the taillights). I bought one years ago from a parts supplier and it looks like a thin plastic thermoform molded part. My questions are: 1. Was this part originally a plastic injection mold or a fiberglass molded part? 2. How did it originally attach to the car? 3. Is it supposed to have any kind of a backing material attached to it?
For an M Series the original was plastic (earlier cars were fiberglass). It is attached using small flat head screws through the plastic on to the chassis beneath (you should have traces of the old holes). There is no backing material
Hi Rob: Thanks for the reply. I have attached a photo of my rear trunk framing with green colored arrows showing all the holes in the framing. Can you identify which ones were used for the plastic cover? The two holes in the horizontal frame tube are larger than the other 3 holes...it has been a while now since I disassembled the car but I am thinking that the two larger holes were possibly for wire harness clips and the other 3 smaller holes were for the cover...what do you think? The central and side ones look correct. As you stated the two on the horizontal bar would have held a wiring harness
Hi Rob: That seems to make sense to me...I seem to recall when I removed the wire harness there were 2 plastic wraparound wire straps with a post that snapped into the 2 holes...I still have them somewhere. You know, I have this brand new plastic taillamp cover I have had on the shelf for many years that I had intended to use but it has 3 extra holes in it and a step feature for a switch which I believe is for the license plate light of an "E" series Dino...I really want the original design cover for my car that does not have the switch features since they are very visible...but I have not been able to find anybody that sells this cover. So I guess I am going to post a wanted ad for the correct "L" or "M" cover and also state that I would be willing to trade my "E" cover for somebody's new or used "L" or "M" cover.
