250 GT SWB & 275 GTB/4 Left to Charity

Kind of cool.

Selling two Ferraris to buy a boat.

 

Anybody who knew Richard Colton would testify he was a generous and kind man with an incredible knowledge of Ferrari of this period. The fact he bequeathed these two cars to such a worthy charity comes as little surprise.

His RHD 250 SWB 1995 GT was one of the first two cars imported by Maranello Concessionaires in 1960.........the other being 250 SWB 1993 GT. A competition spec car but with a steel rather than alloy body as especially ordered by Ronnie Hoare. The UK press suggest that the two cars will sell for circa GBP8 million but I'm sure that the SWB will easily exceed that figure alone.

 

Good on him. Great story.

It's true what they say, in death the only thing that remains with the living is one's good name.

This man certainly has it, and what a healthy refreshing perspective had on what he thought was important.

I didn't know Richard Colton well, though I did meet him on numerous occasions. He came over as a real gentleman with a passion for his cars.

I admire him even more for his generous donation to the RNLI. What a fantastic legacy.

 

His great reputation even reached these heathen shores. I know he was a stalwart of the V-12 gang in the UK.

 

I think his point is that the owner didnt sell them because of what they were worth nor did he attain them. So much speculation and classic cars being looked at soley as investments that its refreshing to see someone own the cars and then essentially give them away because he got what it worth out of it to him. He then gave them away to benefit another cause.

Maybe I am reading into it too much. But its truly an awesome story.
