Thank you !! My father says it’s probably this car! He’ll try to look for the picture he took at the time but it is unlikely that it has survived over time!

While searching for a 250 GT 2+2 on barchetta.cc, I was disgusted by the number of replicas listed. And I think it's only a half of the cars vanished ! :(
To say that every day in the world (even near the factory), there are still stupid guys who continue to destroy genuine cars with interesting histories...
When will this madness stop ?

By my latest count, 182 GTEs have been converted to replicas of other Ferrari's. However, GTO Engineering has been buying up cars to use the ID numbers for their replica SWB's and they aren't telling which ones and how many...

Sad indeed, but technically none of this is necessarily fault of companies making these fakeydoos.
They’re just capitalizing on desires of posers and wannabes who buy/commission these rather than genuine cars.
Perhaps it would be better to identify/out the owners along with their fakes ?

As long as there’s “market” none of this will stop. I, for one, won’t be surprised when in the future, nice, fully restored GTEs or PF Coupes, etc will be bought for high six or low seven figures, just to get chopped up for their VINs to make more fakeydoo GTOs, SWBs, TRs, etc. :(

And then there is this sad story:

    Image Unavailable, Please Login

Above - 4959 when I brought it home in January 1981 (paid $7000, drove it to Fort Wayne from Indy, smoked, leaked but sounded like a GTO!)

    Image Unavailable, Please Login

Above - 4959 when I tracked it down in the 2000's

Above - the engine ended up in this thing (which, incidentally, was said to have been registered in New York as 4959 - how is that possible?)

    Very sad.......

As showed David, they have already long started destroying cars in good condition. Look what happened to 2517GT, a french 250 GT 2+2 Série 1 which left factory in spring 1961...
And when the stupid owner get tired of his car after his crime, the poor car finished for sale in Italy...:(

Always the same question : how can you be proud to do such a thing? It's beyond me !
And the result is always pathetic and irreversible !

As stated above, there are numerous 250 GTE 'identities' that have been irreversibly extracted to use for 250 SWB Replicas, not to mention a good deal of 330 GTs as well. However, the most bizarre one I've found is surely the 250 GT SWB Replica that was pottering around London with the VIN number of a Ferrari 348. Yes, really.

No, too easy. The owners of the companies where these cars are massacred are as guilty as the owners themselves. The place of all these gangsters is in prison.

Also, while I don’t condone these replicas, but to be fair, the destructive path of many GTE, PF Coupe, etc started already over 50 years when they became old, used cars and were salvaged for their engines and other mechanical components to be used as spares for real GTOs, SWBs, TRs, etc, so should we place the blame on at the time owners of those too ?

P.S. None of this is Ferrari specific. Same has been done with countless other car brands throughout the history.

And again, while not condoning any of these poser/wannabe rides, I believe anyone who truly “hates”(?) and wishes to correct the wrongs done to these unfortunate cars can always put their money where their mouth is by acquiring one or more and get it/them properly restored back to their original configuration.
