I suppose the assumption here is that the SWB replica is a cheater using this car's VIN. Happy to know it remains a GTE and will be restored. And in this specific case I think I like that Cadillac paint better than red.

Fortunately I also noted the source of the info that lists 2745 GT as "SWB body on a 250 GTE chassis" for the 8° Trophée des Ardennes in June 1994: Cavallino #83 page 37, info send by Pierre Goossens.

So... two cars with the same chassis number, or perhaps as merstheman suggests the fake SWB was using a fake chassis number???

Well, that's sad and even more so as it seems someone is using inappropriate (illegal ?) chassis number. :(

Why not take the old girl to the grocery store, not Costco possibly, I think they are meant to be driven.

Also, you have insurance, right? Yes, it is a pain to have one repaired, months, maybe more...

Fake SWB 2745 was soon renumbered into 3437.

In many countries the authorities will accept and record any number provided on a piece of paper, they often have little if any understanding how correct period documents from a foreign country look like.

I remember a case where after looking at a very peculiar serial number on a fake Ferrari I suddenly realized the car had been registered using the firing order found on the engine casting as a serial number.

That is just as silly as getting lost in a German city but remembering you left your car parked in the "Einbahnstrasse"

Better yet, do what she was designed/intended/built for by packing couple of overnight bags and take your significant other along for a weekend getaway down to a beach or mountain cabin or resort, enjoying great driving pleasures to get there and back.
Having her just sit in a garage, collection/museum or brief drives to occasional C & C or show is almost disrespectful of her existence.
Every cool/great car deserves to be driven as much/often as possible and like it’s her last day on this planet.

The idea is great, but where will you park the car? What kind of gas stations are on the way, how's the quality of the gas? Etc.

I agree that it should be done more often, but perhaps there is a business case for an app of some sort which would help the vintage car owner plan for this kind of trip without worrying their car will be damaged/at risk etc.

Just spitballing here. Again, I do think more people should be taking the risk, but it's easy to spend other people's money/time.

If these ^^ are real concerns/worries, let alone obstacles, there's a reasonable chance the owner is not a real car guy/gal or not the right owner for the car he/she is scared/worried of using and perhaps should collect/hoard postage stamps or something like that instead (not that there's anything wrong with stamps ;)).
An app ??? o_O Just like billions of other people, I've been able to make all kinds of travel plans & trips (including +/- 1/2 million miles in vintage cars) 40+ years without having a single one and I seriously doubt any such will help sissies to overcome their fears/worries you note above.

An 86 y.o. friend of mine has a picture on his garage/shop wall denoting his efforts of 10+ years of building a world record race car (he got the record about 15 years ago and it still stands) almost single handedly and using many very unconventional approaches and ideas.
The picture is a drawing of a scraggly looking cat with a phrase "Pu**ies will never be heroes !" below it.

If you are driving an alfa GTV, go your own way with no worries.

Things change if you're taking out a car worth several hundred thousand dollars etc...

Again, easy to spend other people's money/time.

I often wonder if people scared/worried about driving/using their vintage cars (for whatever lame excuse they come up with) are also not living/using or allowing visitors to their homes for fear of wear, tear or worries of depreciation.
Same with owners of nice boats, Persian rugs, silverware, wristwatches or any other luxuries they’ve acquired.

I guess it’s good I can’t afford seven or eight figure car(s) as my use of it/them would likely cause many here loss of sleep or worse.

P.S. I apologize for derailment of the topic and will stop now.

I am also going off on a tangent as this clearly is a thread about 250 GTE, a lovely car, and so very significant in Ferrari history.

It really boils down to riding a (motor) bike. Everyone is out to kill you, so you are very attentive in your driving,
very defensive. At least in a car your odds are better. Clearly, some bikers are dumber than a rock also.

    F-150...1, Motorcycle...0.

As simple as that. In normal cars, how many accidents do you have? And in those, you are very distracted by all sorts of
odds and ends , and Apps. In a Ferrari, your only distraction is the joy of that car. If it is early '70.

Later ones, like new ones, they will kill you if you are not super smart. I recall a few...

So relax, calm down and go and drive that car. I remember a GTO blowing up its rear wheel, thus the fender.
When the owner was asked, he replied, you just fix it like before. Then, put on another wheel, and continue racing at Sears Point.

A fender is a fender. Clearly an 8 figure Ferrari, may require some more secluded roads, but you know what? F...it...Otherwise why buy it?

I drive in El Salvador where everyone will try to hit you as (99.9%) they do not know how to drive. Zero accidents, in 58 years, started driving at 11.

Just go out and drive, enjoy life, otherwise one day you die without having driven your precious (fill in the blank). That, is not what life is all about...:D

    Regards, Alberto

Bringing this back on topic, I always wondered if anyone knows what GTE was available for sale at Heritage Classics in Los Angeles in June/July 2006? Weird question I know, but that - a silver car - and a PF Cab also for sale there (Black on Red) were the first vintage Ferraris I was ever allowed to sit in and look at in detail and I fell in love with both these models ever since then. Always wondered what the s/n were on those cars. The GTE was for sale for 90 thousand USD and the PF for 120 if I remember correctly.

No joke, for sale with all data listed in the add. Think it was a TR/59-style fake built around a V6-engine.

You can handle this much off topic: Gianni Cancellieri, whose name might sound familiar to those who read Ferrari books, once told me that he came from Stockholm to Turku with a boat in late 50's, and then took a bus from Turku to Helsinki. He carefully wrote names of the towns they drove past into a notebook, but started to doubt something was wrong when he had written the word "Kahvila" 5 times in a row. Well, can't blame him it resembles a typical Finnish town name - a small town might be called Myllyla if there was a mill for instance... but small boutiques are also called "Kahvila" if they serve coffee...

And yes, my favorite motel in Germany is named Zimmer frei, I recommend that if you ever drive past the town called Ausfahrt!

Getting back to the car in question, I am happy to hear that the SN was corrected and will note that in the Register. Now let's get it back on the street! And speaking of the street, I agree that if you are an alert driver, there is no problem driving in in any weather (though the windshield wipers are not great!). I watch were I park as to avoid door dings and when I go overnight, I check with the hotel to see what their parking situation is. Having a padded car cover also helps. If nothing else, the manual gearbox (millennial anti-theft device) will scare most joy riders away.

Merstheman - That would be 4665 GT. It later sold through Fantasy Junction to a guy in Australia. As of 2018, it was still there and running well.

Left hand-drive historic vehicles have been able to be registered in NSW since 1999. They can either be:
