Does anyone know what the correct period radio was fitted into a European Series 1 250 GTE. Oh and any ideass teh correct model one can be scourced online... Thanks, Darren.
Tom Yang's (tomyang.net) got some threads on vintage radios for vintage ferraris. I've occasionally seen them on ebay if you like bargain hunting. I'd still like to figure out a covert IPOD install for my car, so I can listen to my choice of music on the road.
Rich, Still on the ball I see ! Car is now in New Jersey and waiting for a Bentley to arrive to share the container over to the UK. I am being told about 2 weeks until arrival in UK. Can't wait obviously ! Will keep you posted. Darren.
Tony, I regularly look at TomYang and although he has a section on Vintage Radio's I could not find anything that tells you what was shipped as standard from teh nfactory. I will keep looking. On teh subject of IPOD's I just bought a little Smart car as a runaround and thd elaer told me that SMart (Mercedes) are building 70 "specials" that will be called SmartPODS. They will be same colour as the standard IPOD and will have an attachment on the dash for you to drop it in and play those tunes. Maybe that as an alternative for you Darren
The factory didn't install radios. That was left up to dealers or customers. Popular period choices were Blaupunkts or Beckers.
You want a Blaupunkt Frankfurt. Look at the serial number to get the right series (year) for your car (if you are that interested in sweating the details).
On the subject of IPODS, There is the extremley handy "iTrip" It is an FM transmitter and it transmits directly to your radio. iTrip requires no wires and no other sources of power- it attatches directly to your iPod! Check it out more here: http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/itrip/
What's an IPOD? I took a crappy 1970's radio out of my 330 2+2 and want to install something completely inconspicuous. I still neeed to get rid of the 6" speakers with black plastic covers that are cut into the panels next to the back seats.
iPOD-Apple's cool music gizmo. What I need are some 12V powered speakers that are small enough to put under the dash in some unobtrusive location. The iPod can be controlled remotely so it can be hidden too. My car has no radio or console, and I have no interest in fabricating one in order to get the vintage sound of a vintage radio.
My 1964 330 GT has the original radio installed by the dealer, A Blaupunkt MW/LW/SW stereo. Similar radios were supplied in the US in Porsches and VWs. There are a lot of them around, although most are labeled AM/FM/SW if US delivery. Hope this is helpful.
Several of these on Ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7901627495&category=10076 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=27385&item=2477481739&rd=1 There are more, lots more. It is true that 60's and 70's did not come with factory radios. The dealer would either do the install himself or hook up with a local car stereo "specialist". One of those happens to be the folks at Goodman Radio in Bryn Mawr, PA. They did the installs for Algar in the day. I'm sure they would take a minute or two to talk about period correct radios. Maybe I'll quiz him this week and post a list. His website is:www.goodmanradio.com.
The second ebay link Dave posted is very close, although it has the later "safety" flat rubber knobs. The ones on mine are like late 50's American car radio knobs, long, knurled plastic chrome. I'll be glad to post a picture if it would be helpful. My 330 was delivered in Dusseldorf Germany by Auto Becker, the largest German Ferrari dealer of the day. I suspect that a lot of Euro 250 GTEs had similar radios.
both of the links show radios much later than 1963, the last year of the 250 GTE. They would be appropriate for a 330 or later car. thx luke
