I live in Joplin and I was eating at a Steak and Shake with my sister and dad. I was wearing one of my Ferrari shirts and a man behind us said he liked it. So me and him got to talking and he told me that he had a Maserati 300S, a car whos name I cant remember, a Ferrari 275 GTB Speciale, and a Ferrari 250 GTO! At first I was sure I heard him wrong but we went out to his trailer for a look, and sure enough there they were! The Maser and the other car were on the bottom, and the two Ferraris were on the top rack. The 250 was behind the 275, so I climbed up and examined the two stallions. My hands were shaking with shock that the most valuable Ferrari in the world was sitting less than an inch away from me, the most beautiful sight Ive ever seen. It overshadowed the 275 and made the two cars below me obsolete. What I saw still hasnt sunk in, and Ive spent every day since then, June 20, tryin to explain just what I saw. Seeing that priceless piece, actually 14 million dollars, of history overshadowed all the Ferrari dealers Ive been to.

Forget about what people are willing to pay for it today... Imagine how, back when they were first made, you could get a used one for a few grand... They are amazing machines, from the most amazing automobile manufacturer in existence... That's a cool story... Did you get any pictures...?

The funny part is that, if you could take a step back, forget the history and heritage ... (say, like a yonker today who never learned it), you might look at the coachwork, the production numbers, and conclude that ....

    ... it's a prototype 240Z. ;)

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, the 250GTO has to be the most flattered car in history. :D

So what does make the 250GTO so special?

Its mill was an old design recycled from the TR.
The coachwork didn't even come from Ferrari.
The period tires were pretty lame.
The performance isnt' all that great by today's standards.

So is it just that it completely spanked everything else for several years?

But what was so innovative? It didn't have any technological marvel like wings or active suspension or turbos or anything to give it an edge over the competition.

    Was it the balance?

    Or was it the drivers?

    Discuss ....

(This is probably the wrong time for a "pop up ten point" question --- everybody's in Montreal. :p)

I would bet the fourth car was a white Chaparral 1? And the trailer was black and charcole with a yellow stripe?

I just think it looks beautiful. I love original Datsun 240Zs, too. I'm looking at buying one to go with my 350.

That is why you wear Ferrari shirts because you just never know when or where.

No Im sorry I didnt get any pictures but I found out later my dad had his camera on him so that makes me a little mad. To anyone who thinks Ferrari shirts should only be worn to special occasions, stop thinking like that! You just never know what you can find. That day I was headed for a 3 hour drive to Wichita, and before that I was at a bread place! No special occasions there. The other car whos name I couldnt remember was a Chapperal. I need to research those...he told me to, because it was the only car in the trailer that I didnt know what it was...and yes it might have had a yellow stripe. How did you know...to whoever said that?

There were only a handful of 250 GTOs made. Are you sure it was an original or could it have been a replica?

Yes, the Chaparral 1 was purchased at auction a few years ago in Monterey and raced there last year as were the Ferrari's

I have not read anything in the other posts that confirm that the car is an original 250 GTO.

Those Waltons are more powerful than I thought. They moved Bentonville from Arkansas to Arizona?

There may well be a Bentonville in Arkansas but for the sake of accuracy there is also a Bentonville in Arizona where Mr Walton lives.

    Kindest regards
