Hi All, I'm looking for factory paint for Rossa Cina and Blu Gentiana. These are colours on 250 GTOs. This is for modeling projects. I prefer automotive paint, and would like a code that I can get mixed up at my PPG or Dupont dealer in the US. English and Italian codes do not usually work, but any info would be appreciated. Many thanks! Steve
Hi Steve we are currently researching the formula of Rosso china for the 250 GTO we are restoring. I am talking to Lechler which is an Italian paint manufacturer so there is hope. The problem is that in the 1960s small volume motor manufacturers used Thermoplastic acrylic which was high in solvents. With all the new regulations covering VOC emmissions manufacturers have dropped the old paint systems in favour of high solids / low emmissions type paints and so all the old codes are pretty much redundant, it is possible to supply a sample to the paint manufacturer and have it spectro analysed or in some cases the manufactuer will cross reference the old formular and re - calibrate with varying degrees of success, Will keep you posted, Blu Gentia I'm not familliar with this colour, is this the colour for Brandon Wangs car ? if so I could ask him on your behalf, Kindest regards Kevin O'Rourke.
I too would like to know which GTO was "blu genziana" (correct spelling, also referred to as Gentian Blue in English) and where does this info come from (I have no color codes for GTOs). Color code for this color was MM16229 and this car was used by Ferrari on 0719SA and a handful of other cars. Best wishes, Kare
Many thanks for your responses. Kare, My research indicates that blue genziana (thanks for the spelling!) was on S/N 3223 after the initial presentation, and was also on S/N 3387. http://www.ferrariforum.com/register/view.php?id=3387GT It probably also would have been on S/N 0794TR at 62 leMans. Do you know the paint manufacturer of the code you gave me? Kevin, Brandon Wangs car is a much darker blue - see the attached link for a pic of 3387. 3387 was the medium metallic blue with white stripe that was at Monterey in '04. When you get your China Red paint match would you be willing to send me a sample? I love your website - please keep posting the photos of the GTO restoration! Can you say which S/N you are working on? Many thanks for your responses! Steve Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hi Steve, from memory Ferrari used Thermoplastic acrylic paint made by Glidden / Saalchi right up untill the introduction of the 308 QV ( road cars were painted in Rosso chiaro think code was 20-r-190 ) when they changed over to Glasurit 2 pack. Allthough Glidden Saalchi was inferior old tech paint it was a spot on colour match every time. We now have durable paint but dozens of shades of Rosso corsa. Glidden Saalchi have since been swallowed up by competitors so apart from accademic interest there is little value in knowing those old codes. I have some old tehnical sheets at work and I'll dig them out for you. Chassis number of the car we are conserving can be seen on the GTO restoration posting, Cheers Kevin.
Hi Steve, whilst I await an answer from Lechler I did some checking through our colour files. I can not find any reference to Ferrari Rosso Cina, The only manufactureres that I could find listing a Rosso Cina was Fiat who have a formula dating from 1956 and Alfa Romeo who have a formula but it is from 1969 onwards. As for the blue genziana I could not find any record, I cross referenced Ferrari, Fiat and Alfa as it is not uncommon for manufactureres to lift each others colours but no mention was found. I'll knock up some of the Fiat Rosso Cina tomorrow and see what it sprays out like, one of the problems is that Ferrari would often call the same colour different names, why ? who knows. I have original Ferrari colour swatches named differently, confusing EH ?. will keep you informed, Cheers Kev.
I found this thread when I searched for the color rosso cina which was used on the 250 GTOs. Any further information on the (Fiat) color? Is there an available color in existence which is basically the same?
Steve, Try calling PPG at 440-572-2800 ask for the color library. They have some formulas going back to 1963. I called looking for amaranto roma which they did not have . They did say they had a formula for rosso cina. They will only give it to authorized dealers , but they will fax it to your local PPG rep. Mike
