At one time there was a replica of the 250 LWB spyder called the Modena. Then it was sold out to some group called Precision Design and Engineering in Arizona and they called it the Cal Spyder. They had a web site called calspyder.com. But that site is now dead. I found a reference to kitcar.com indicating that they had an update showing where the company is now. But their website is somewhat goofy and I couldn't find any indication except the obsolete calspyder website. Anybody know where, or if, the current company is located? And was this car based on the LWB spyder or the later SWB spyder? Does anybody know the exact wheelbase length of this kit?

I have no real info except I thought that kit was built on a Mustang chassis.

I LIKE THESE CARS!! Just do NOT put a damn ferrari badge on it!!!

I've run into the same thing as Arlie, doesn't look like they're going to produce any new kits anytime soon. Always had a particular fascination with this model. I know, I know, everybody here HATES the kitcars, etc, you should "save up and buy the real thing", etc, wouldn't be caught dead in it, etc. . .

BUT what if I built one and didn't put ferrari badges on it?! One thing about the Modena (calspyder or what have you) is that everybody agrees that it does NOT look like any particular ferrari model. When badged with ferrari badges it's an abortion, abomination, a FAKER, etc. But put "modena" badges on it. . .and you have a V8 or V12 powered italian hotrod.

People will still holler "KIT" or "faker" or "buy the real thing", but who the hell has a spare 2 million laying around?!! Besides, it's only a fiberglass-bodied "italian classic" anyway, especially if it's not trying to be be the real thing at all!!

All that said, I would try to:
    shorten the nose,
    square-out the grille opening,
enlargen the turn-signal openings and put in red lights,
narrow the front/rear track (tuck the wheels in a bit),
put in a gated shifter and 410 superamerica-style front seat upholstery,
and manufacture a fiberglass hardtop that resembles a certain you-know-what-make option.

let the flames begin. . .

(by the way, if I had my druthers I'd be driving a 308gt4)

I agree, I always thought it was illegal to put genuine badges on a fake car

Yes they are fakes but what the owners do to them should be their business. I don't want to open another can of worms but most people including most in this chat room can't afford the real thing ( and I mean the real classic Ferraris and not just buying a beat up low end 308 just to have bragging rights) so you go for a copy just like all the fake clothes, purses, breasts, paintings, etc, etc that everyone else is buying.

I can't see why putting real badages on a car (any car) would be illegal.

Who's would possibly enforce that against a private individual? The Modena police? The Ferrari factory security gaurds?

If that were the case then everyone who has a tow vehicle or trailer with a badage or S/F sheild on it would be illegal?

I'm not trying to be mean, it's just a private owner can do whatever the heck he wants to his own car.

Ferrari has in the past and probably will in the future go after companies who put badages or sheilds on replica models/bodies they manufacture. That's a whole different story involving patents, trademarks, etc...

Putting real badages on a privately owned replica is a moral choice not a legal one IMO.

I would be more inclined to find a rusting 250 GTE chassis and the engine out of a 400A(?), add the Calspyder body and you have a beautiful car that is legally a Ferrari. (original Ferrari chassis with Ferrari serial number stampings and Ferrari serial number tags). If anybody turns their nose up at it, then they don't get a ride. If they want me to own the real thing, then they can give me a million dollars.

Mustangs don't have a chassis; they are unibody. The CalSpyder had it's own custom made frame: http://www.kitcarmag.com/featuredvehicles/5531/

i agree, a rusting ellena can be found for $30K and the chassis and running gear are identical to a tdf or LWB cal spyder - after the work has been done you don't have a replica but a rebody!!

Not sure about that. Some friends of mine drove their Daytona spyder replica right through Maranello and got thumbs up.
