Any tricks in replacing the water pump on a 250 SWB? How do you support the drive gear when you pull the pump out? Thanks, Don
If you need to actually remove the shaft there are some other parts that you need to keep track of besides the sprocket. It will likely involve loosening (or removing completely) the timing chain and removing the left cam sprocket cover. Try to avoid dropping the sprocket spacers into the "Abyss". With a little luck you might be able to guide the whole works (including the sprocket) out through the timing cover. Keep an assortment of magnets and long screwdrivers handy to help guide things where they need to go. Not really a job for a beginner.
There is no actual pump that you replace, just a seal. The impeller comes off and the seal is underneath it. You do not remove the shaft. If you need to remove the housing with the bearing and oil seal, you still leave the shaft in place in the rear bearing. This keeps the sprocket from dropping down inside the timing cover.
