Did you guys see the BJ Auction on Speed TV today?

They just sold a ponzi blue 550 barchetta for 251k (what a great deal!)

They said it was the only ponzi blue one made and that Ponzi was the French ferrrari importer and Ferrari often named colors after their sucessful business partners.

They also said that they chopped the tops off of 550's to get the last few out of the factory inventory lot.

The host didn't sound too sure of his facts :) Sounded like he was making it up as he went.

What did the 550b sell for new?

Always said that the barchetta would be a difficult car to move once the initial excitement had faded. If there are still new ones sitting somewhere you will be able to get them for a song soon.

I'd hate to have own one that I was trying to trade or sell :(, might as well leave the keys in it and do an insurance claim ;)

Somebody should sue Ferrari for designing and building such a STUPID car, and charge them for the loss of value.

Hopefully soon Ferrari will bring out a PROPER convertible for that model range and then buyers will not be buying a toy but a proper car.

That mid-200's price sounds about right. As many of you know, i had one of the first ones in the US, it stickered for around 280k, but Ferrari required buyers to sign an agreement prohibiting any resale of the car, except back to the original dealer, for one year. Some owners and dealers were able to do pretty well while the car was "hot"; i kept mine for a couple years, and drove it.
If you don't need a top, its a great car. There is nothing like an open twelve cylinder ferrari; particularly one that is brand-spanking new and never fondled by others. The car looks different than the Maranello, and i recognize that many who like the lines of the latter didn't care for the barchetta. As far as i know, ones originating from the factory were not "cut" Maranellos. Most of the cars on the market (and there are alot of them for well under 300k-Rick Black aside) are garage queens, which is unfortunate. (I actually enjoyed it more than my Maranello, but that's partly a question of taste- the roll hoops disrupted the flow of the line- look at the Nembo spider 1777 for a much cleaner look 30 years earlier- and the back lid was enormous, nacelles notwithstanding. For some reason, it also ran better, seemed to have more low end torque and the gear box was much nicer to shift than my earlier Maranello). In black, the color did much to diminish the apparent size of the rear deck, but it clearly wasn't ferrari's best design effort. Some would say that about the Maranello as well. Nonetheless, having driven the open version of this car more than most people probably have, its a car you could live with (in Arizona). Keep an eye on those prices- i think there's still room to drop, given the bargain basement prices of their hardtop brethren.

remember that the 550B was not intended to be a spyder. its suppose to reflect the design of the 166 barchetta. a front engine V12 open air car. they are still keeping in touch with the companies roots. it also looks much better than a spyder would because the back flows without any canvas or slots where a top would fit.

i think that this car is awsome and im glad that they take "risks" when making cars like this. it would be boring if they made cars for the masses. besides maybe this was a planned action, in the sense that they had the 550 then the 550B to get our mouths wet...then the 575 came along and now we're hearing rumors about a 575 spyder. if there was a 550 spyder and then a 575 spyder...there would not be a huge market for the 575 spyder. but if a 575 spyder comes out now...people will go crazy for it...its what most people are waiting for.

Surely the 166 Barchetta was like that because Ferrari was to cheap and nasty to design a hood. We are talking the late 40's here, plus it was a race car. It is inexcusable to me for Ferrari to pull that BS on their modern cars when they are building a 150% ROAD car with absolutely NO racing connections or intentions.

Sounds like marketing BS to me, and way to much red wine. If they were serious about keeping intouch for their roots then the 550B would not have been the worlds biggest open top barge ... it would be small and nimble. Look at the 166, a tiny car. The 550 must be close to the largest car ever produced outside of America (including the 60's) ...

Suck up the crazy Italian marketing hype if you want to. But no other company could get away with charging customers a fortune for a half finished car. Maybe they are cleverer than I give them credit for :D

The bargain price was also due to the fact that it was at the Barret Jackson auction. While muscle cars usually command ridiculous prices at the Arizona auction in Jan, the buyers there are probably not looking to buy a Ferrari. So, it gets less attention from real buyers than an auction at Pebble Beach or the the all Ferrari auction at Gstaad.
