    Hey,

i'm walking the dog while I'm on the phone. She pulls on the leash and I drop the phone onto the pavement - It obviously landed right on a corner and the glass shattered - It stayed in place, and everything still worked, but a spider-webbed screen wasn't doing it for me.....

Turns out there are lots of videos on youtube that show you how to replace the glass - It didn't look too hard, so I ordered (from "pdasmart.com") new glass and their "toolkit" to make the fix.....

The bad news is it seems the vid's show taking apart a nice new phone - After two years of living in my pockets mine absolutely did not want to come apart - In fact, their tiny Phillips wouldn't even fit into the screws on the bottom as they were so gunked up - I got 'em out with a timy flat blade, but splitting the thing in two was nigh-on impossible :(

Suffice to say I got it apart, but it was a real mess (destroyed the gasket etc) - By the time I got the connectors apart I knew deep down I was hosed :(

The pdasmart site offers a "return and we'll fix it" option for an additional $15 - I should have done that, but didn't want to be without my only phone for 3-5 days - Fail!

In summary, I like to think I'm pretty good with this stuff, but learnt a lesson on this one!

Oh well, I've now got a shiney new 3GS :) Much faster!..... Incidentally, the Apple store couldn't give me the upgrade price but sent me on to a "full service" AT&T store which did give me the $199 price on a new one with an $18 upgrade fee.

HTH someone else avoid the pain!,

    Cheers,
    Ian

It's a 2 year old phone, why not just do the free plan upgrade to the 3g and toss the damn thing...???

Dis-regard I read the end of your post.... so sorry

I dropped my iPhone, too, and it rendered it totally useless. I switched to a different phone after seeing how easily iPhones break!

    Was it wearing any "protection"?

To be fair, mine wasn't as I'd always felt cases etc just make 'em bigger - Fits in jeans pocket just great.... The new one has a "Speck" case - Still fits easily into pocket but (hopefully) prevents similar disasters in the future......

Mine did continue working though, and it really was "yanked" from my hand onto concrete, so I'll accept that.... 'Twas I that "destroyed" it.....

    Cheers,
    Ian

I'm dropped my iPhone, without any protection, and the screen cracked. The screen still worked, but the spider screen was bothering me. Called Apple and they said they'd give me a brand new phone for $250 but I decided I'd take a crack at it myself first.

I bought the digitizer + glass screen from pdaparts for like $50 and I did it myself. I followed the instructions online / YouTube, worked out! Everything works perfectly, looks new, and I didn't have to buy a new iPhone... EDIT: but it looks like you got the 3GS now, congrats!

    Cheers,

Fourth time mine dropped a call (two days into ownership), I smashed it on a sidewalk then went to apple, got a new one, and sold it on craigslist in its original packaging for a fat profit, half of which I used to buy a Samsung.

    I love the iphone!

Should have done it a few more times, now that I think about it.
