Item #4576648934 on current ebay auction is a (supposedly new in wrapper) Dino key fob, with a current bid of $2700. ! I always knew the air was pretty thin up here.

The key fob may be the reason that last week's Dino books, pouch and key fob
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8001038624

attained nearly $2000.00 more than the price of the Daytona:

Can anyone else recall the time when the Dino was dispelled as "not quite" a Ferrari?
The mid engine layout does pose some difficulty of tight areas when doing maitenance, but on the road it is a great driving package.

I wonder if that shop on the bag is still around?

If it is you could fly there, buy one, have a nice dinner in MILAN and sell it on EBay for less than that bid.

I purchased my first Dino in late 1981 for $10,500 when I was 19. Bought from a German film maker here in So. Cal. still having Stuttgart plates on it. I found out how difficult it was to convert and sold it into Canada.

The second car was bought in early 1983 which I drove for 10 years. I was put off by someones comment in the local Ferrari Club of "Oh just a Dino." I was as enthusiastic of an owner as one could meet and to this day think a Dino is a wonderful car and a true Ferrari.

After owning 3 more Ferrari's over the years (BB512 now). I have never joined the club. No real reason but it just never felt important after that initial impression. So I do remember those days.

But, I have for 20 years been involved with "The Dark Side" club.....

    Regards,
    Ralph

Absolutely identical key fobs with paper wrapper can be bought for US$ 80 (eighty) at "Shopping Formula One" store in downtown Maranello, right across the Ferrari factory entrance. Or at the various swap meets in Italy such as Imola (ten days ago) or Padova (November). The ebay price is ridiculous...........a joke, to say the least.

this fob is an an original omea dino fob in it's original package. i only know of three fobs, in this state to exist. one is in japan. the second is in a private collection. the third is this fob, which came from the same collection as the second fob.

i am sure there are more in the world, but they aren't trading on the open market, or at least haven't for many years.

the omea fob is the rarest of the dino fobs, with regard to the offerings. if anyone has one of these that they would like to sell, or any dino fob for that matter, please p.m. me.

i believe there are repros to be had "somewhere" in the world. however, an original is an original. when you get into "rare" items, you should expect to pay a good price, after all, that is what keeps them rare.

if anyone has any dino fobas like this one, or any old dino or ferrari fobs for sale, please p.m. me.

    thanks,

I'm interested to know what intrinsic property makes this key fob 'worth' this money. Is it the artistic design or the precious materials used in it's manufacture?

IMHO it is nonesense to say that an ordinary key fob is worth this kind of money, even it is as rare as it appears.

'Must have everything' rich kids give confidence to Ferrari themselves and almost everyone else in the Ferrari world to overcharge for simple parts or accessories to the detriment of all owners and enthusiasts. Have you noticed how much an 'official' Ferrari pencil costs?

I have no problems with the market values of a GTO or similar, where the buyer invariably obtains a slug of real history and something to enjoy, but I'll never understand what drives someone to pay 3K for a mass produced keyring.

what "intrinsic value" gives the gto more value than the 250 gte?

what "intrinsic value" gives a honus wagner baseball card the value it has, after all, it IS just a piece of paper.

    the keyfob wasn't mass produced.

if you believe the value is bogus, find another one, sell it to me and make a few bucks off the deal.

    John,

I actually agree with WS Speer on this. You can make an identical copy of a GTO for about $350k, yet real ones are worth many times that, why? Because that is what people are willing to pay today for real ones. The history argument is bogus in my opinion because original cars with little or no race history still command top dollar if they are the right model. The key fob is the same story on a smaller scale.

That said I have a cheap knock-off key fob for my 330. I'd rather put money towards improving my car or getting another car than making sure I have the correct clock tag, etc. (unless of course, if someone found a clock tag that stated the clock is for display only - not for telling time, then I would be very interested!).

    Regards,

    Art S.

It all depends what you mean by mass produced. Not in Model T numbers for sure, but it doesnt seem much different to the standard Ferrari key fob of the time and I imagine that they were produced in significant numbers.

If there is a willing seller and a willing buyer, so be it. I don't know if the deal is bogus or not but my point is that this sort of thing encourages stupid pricing of all things Ferrari.

Bingo! Hit it on the head.

Has anyone else noticed that the pace of Dinos / Dino items is rising faster than most other F-car models?

12+ years ago I was buying stuff from Dennis McCann, John Kennedy, Sheehan, etc because the stuff was missing when I bought my Dino. I was very enthusiastic about the car and paying top dollar. Today those prices seem like a bargain.

The Dino soft top cover that was won for $2125.00

    is absolutely unobtainium.
I can count the number of times I've seen it for sale on one hand over the last 15 years.
Clutch bell housing boots used to be the same rarity too.

How do you tell the real Dino key fobs from the repros?
