Greg, To comment on your original question regarding exhaust system finishes, I'll toss my understanding into the pot. I believe the Abarth based systems featured mixed finishes. Muffler packs and tips sets would have been finished in black wrinkle by Abarth as part of their manufacturing process. My understanding is that the tubing was fit in Maranello and painted black. This type of finish can be traced back to the 250 series. Spacem systems were typically finished in a silver. Cerretto systems were mostly silver similar to Spacem. I do have images of a few which were black . Maybe these sporadic systems were painted after delivery?
from what I’ve learned so far pertaining to Cerretto systems that I have and have seen on different cars like chassis number 10803 looks like the main front resonator and central mufflers were silver, and the rear section looks exactly like my original uninstalled system in black satin number 09689 looks to be possibly a mixture and the tips are more like an Abarth system with a more precise sleeve pressed on at the end and not welded at the leading edge interesting detail chassis number 10559 all black, especially where it pertains to the rear section with the tips there is absolutely no evidence of silver looks to be crudely masked just passed the weld marks and painted satin black nothing fancy thanks for your input will keep at it Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
As a curious rail bird, I am trying to understand, is this about exhaust systems or judging? Where is the relation, or is it about 'personal' issues? Excuse my lack of comprehension
Alberto: The thread is about how concours judges have failed to comprehend the nuances in how the 275 exhaust systems were installed at the factory. Others pointed out this judging problem also exists for numerous components throughout the cars.
Alberto: The problem of judges competency is exaggerated in the Ferrari world by the value of the cars and the difficulty in restoring them. Owners spend huge sums of money in having cars restored by whom they believe are competent restorers and the restorers themselves spend large amounts of time (some billable and some not) in researching how the cars were built originally. Having a car judged by incompetent judges or, worse yet, judges with a personal agenda, can result in VERY HURT feelings and VERY BAD outcomes.
We are restoring 07529 and are working on trying to sort the exhaust system dilemma as well. From digging around I too think the spacem systems were silver not just on show cars. I would really like to confirm this and make the information more known on such an important detail. I think most 275s even 330gtc’s have the wrong exhaust systems on them as these original systems rotted away and were replaced early on in the cars life. Greg has been a great help with information and references. We are all always learning! Keeps us from loosing our mind! Here are some photos of the new systems installed. Also some photos of some systems and pieces I have in storage if anyone is in need or looking for something.
