Hey all. I picked up an engine crane and engine stand over the weekend, assembled them, and started pulling the difficult stuff off the engine first.

So far, I have the header towards the rear of the car unbolted, but not out. The e-brake cables have been moved out of the way as have all the air-pumps, but the header will still not slide down. I suspect the right rear engine mount has to come off to slide the header out??

Also, I have remover the hex bolts holding the half-shafts to the differential, but some of the hex bolts to the other side of the half-shaft are held on by some sort of interplanetary force not known to Earthly societies yet (they are stuck really well). I have the bolts/nuts soaking in nutbuster. Any tips anyone can share on removing these things?

As you can see by the second pic, this header became *really* hot at some point due to a misfire. When I first purchased the car, I noticed this header immediately as I could see the pipes glowing red-hot. I immediately performed a major and the car has been fine since. Just a drag because I have an ugly header now.....

I can't remember for sure, but I thought the rear header came out pretty easily. The front came out after removing the passenger side fuel tank.

There are some in-depth threads with step-by-step descriptions that I relied on when I did mine.

Have you given any thought to removing the heat shields from the headers? I don't know if it is advised, or not, but I left mine on and I suspect they are part of a rattling noise coming fom back there. It would have been a much easier task while the engine was out.

If you remove the heat shields you should have the headers coated. A good ceramic coating runs about $500. The idea behind the heat shields is to keep the heat in. Coat both the inside and outside. Pic is of one header with the shield removed and before coating. Looks nasty.

I ended up replacing the headers with new just so there were no test ports or welded up holes. Went with silver to kind of match the rest of the SS pipes and muffler.

Thanks. It was just one of those things. As long as we are in there...... Started out as a normal major service. It had not been done for a long time. Ended up rebuilding everything. LOL ,,,, I should be good to go for quite a while now. Got a friends QV in the shop for the same. Wonder how far he will go with his. First pic is mine. Second pic is QV just getting started on the work.

Some might like to document this little tidbit. I am filling a box and calling it 'the emission crap box'. So far, I have both air pumps in there, one valve and a couple hoses. The box is already a shade over 20lbs. I just have a valve, couple hoses, and the injectors themselves to go. Might make the 25lb mark.

No, I'm not quite that brave nor do I see the gain being entirely worth the expense for my purposes.

I had a whole trunk full of this stuff when I did mine. Your engine will thank you.

If you pull all that stuff off the engine will it still pass inspection. Or is that not a problem in your state.

Not an issue in Oklahoma. I recently moved from Las Vegas where unfortunately it was a huge issue, otherwise I would have pulled this engine and upgraded it years ago. It was very frustrating having to tune the car specially to pass emissions and inspection. The car runs like a dog, hot, and it ruins a weekend.

Made some progress tonight. Managed to get the header at the 1-4 bank out. Thanks to Paul and Larry, the header comes out the top. Remove air injection tubes, cam cover (header gets stuck on the air pump mounting portion of cover), and out the manifold comes. Also, I removed the half shafts. For really stuck hex bolts, give them a couple good whack with a brass hammer and they come right out.

I placed the cam cover back to keep the cams from getting dirty.

I believe this engine ranks right up there with Paul's engine in the dirty department. Really disgusting. Nothing a power washer can't fix

Ok, I know I don't have pics. I promise more are coming.

Had about an hour or so to tinker last night. The other half shaft came out without much drama. I found the most difficult part of removing them was finding position in which I could apply sufficient torque to the bolts. I was in the trunk lifting on the wrench for the inner bolts, and on my back nearly under the brakes for the others.

    Remaining:
    disconnect starter
    disconnect alternater
remove/get out of the way a/c compressor
    remove bell housing/drop gears
    disconnect shift linkage
    disconnect ground strap
    disconnect motor mounts

The hard stuff is out of the way.
I will be lifting the engine a la factory spec with the 1-4 bank being lifted first with the 5-8 header still attached. Searching the forums shows a couple have done this before, and in speaking with a couple old Ferrari mechanics it seems to be a good way to go.
